πŸͺ· Announcing our 2023 residents:
Elyas Alavi, Natalie Quan Yau Tso 左君悠 and Nadia Refeai.
We are excited to support their practice this year.

β€˜During my residency I will work on a new body of work Cheshme-e Jaan (The spirit spring), including poetry and neon installation. As an extension to Hyphenated Biennial 2021-2022, this is part of my ongoing research into history of Cameleers in Australia. This new body of work will be exhibited at the TarraWarra Biennial 2023.’ β€”

β€˜Bones is an attempt to make sense of what makes my body Chinese, or not, as a Hong Kong-Australian. I will develop a non-traditional ritual to connect with my ancestor by collecting saliva and sweat in the process of feeding myself General Tso’s chicken across this residency.’ β€”

β€˜At the moment I’m interested in informal and incidental modes of gathering and connection, and how culture and community forms in different neighbourhoods. I hope to spend my time in Naarm exploring these ideas and connecting with artists and community, sharing meals, and visiting some home gardens if I’m really lucky!’ β€”

Congratulations Jing Liang and Lala Zarei, High Commendations of πŸͺ· π’©π‘’π“Œ π»π“Žπ“…π’½π‘’π“ƒπ“ˆ πŸͺ· Graduate Awards.

Jing Liang, graduated from and her porcelain sculpture Coming Home is experimental in both its technique and concept, exploring the fragmentation of migration through material; while Lala Zarei from and her work I Have A Voice To Be Heard is a moving work that interrogates the viewer’s position in the women’s fight for freedom in Iran.

β€˜The porcelain sculpture titled β€˜Coming Home’ references symbols in childhood gardens while using found objects from my current home to create a connection between past and present and familial feelings that we all share. By experimenting burn-out technique, using the material of porcelain and recycled cardboard that β€˜burn-out’ of the clay form when fired in the kiln. The remaining β€˜husk’ and β€˜fragments’ serves as a metaphor for what is left behind when considering about my past and my cultural identity.’

Jing Liang create artworks that raise questions and expand the perspective in understanding of the complexity of an environment, as well as the fragility of life and memory. Her work questions the boundaries of what ceramic form might be.

β€˜I want to speak out for Iranian females and tell the stories of sounds that have been silenced for decades after the Iran revolution of 1978-79. This project contributes to
a continuous series of my works advocating Iranian female fights for their basic rights.’

Lala Zarei is an Iranian-Australian multi-disciplinary artist. She tries to capture her identity by investigating contrasts between cultures through personal stories.

Congrats .jing.archive and πŸ‘πŸΌ

Congratulations Cam Wu, the inaugural winner of πŸͺ· π’©π‘’π“Œ π»π“Žπ“…π’½π‘’π“ƒπ“ˆ πŸͺ· Graduate Awards.

New Hyphens is a 2-year initiative for freshly graduated artists of Asia-Pacific background. From all the grad shows in Melbourne this year, we selected one winner and two high commendations. The winner will receive $1,500 cash and residency at Hyphenated Projects and a year-long mentorship, while the highly commended artists will receive $500 cash and mentorship.

Cam Wu, from and her installation Fiat Money has won our hearts this year for its playful exploration of currency and the capitalist construct of our reality.

β€˜In Fiat Money, tanbark is inserted into coin slots, referencing childhood use of tanbark as imaginary money. Wu suggests that children’s playground currency and our official plastic banknotes and coins are not so different – adults and children alike engage in a collective suspension of reality. Valueless objects become something precious.’
Β
Cam Wu is a Chinese-Australian artist living and working on Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung land. Her practice is underpinned by an interest in ritual and narrative, bringing together broader histories and personal stories. Balancing playful humour and a research-informed practice, she explores sociohistorical connections with a poetic sensibility.Β

Welcome πŸ‘πŸΌ and congrats!

🌾 soft update 3: garden update 🌼 our first plums of the season are here + flowers in our garden. It has taken a while and while the plants were set up nicely (πŸ™πŸΌ .a ) two years have pandemic means we haven’t spent a lot of time in the house.
these first plums really mean something to us πŸ‘ we are very interested in maintaining a nice garden + veggie patch another very slow community project 🌱

Lara cooked and served Levantine foods for local creatives from colonised, militarized and invaded lands, in a bronze sculpture shaped of a bomb shell. We are privileged to host this gathering at our house - this work questions deeply the labour of nourishment and destruction of body across many regions in the world.

We love Lara and you should also check out where she collects old milk to make delicious labneh ~
