I think somewhere along the way, we’ve confused personal preference with permission to pass judgement.
Not everything is going to be for you. Not every person is going to move, dress, speak, dance, create, or express themselves in a way that resonates with you.
But when did a difference in taste become a reason to diminish someone else’s self-expression?
One of the reasons I’m so passionate about the work I do is that I see how many people are holding back parts of themselves.
Not because they don’t know who they are.
But because they’ve learnt that the moment they express themselves freely, someone will have something to say about it.
Every week, I support people who are learning to trust themselves, take up space, and care less about being accepted by everyone around them.
And one of the biggest barriers isn’t ability, confidence, or talent. It’s…
The fear of judgement.
The fear of being laughed at.
The fear of standing out.
The fear of being picked apart for simply being themselves.
I’ve had a lot of comments about the way I dance and express myself.
The truth is, they don’t bother me. This tongue ain’t going anywhere 👅
But they do remind me why so many people stay hidden.
Why so many people silence themselves before anyone else gets the chance.
Self-expression is a beautiful thing.
Whether it’s through dance, art, fashion, movement, business, creativity, or simply showing up as yourself.
If something isn’t for you, that’s okay.
But kindness costs nothing.
And the world would be a much better place if more people felt free to express themselves, and more people chose to celebrate that rather than criticise it 🦋💜
