How to get straight walls in your cylinder vessel 👀 Part 2

Getting straight walls isn’t just about lifting the clay upwards, it’s about controlling where that clay is moving.

A common mistake is accidentally lifting out instead of lifting up, which causes your walls to flare and creates more of a bowl shape. A simple reminder we use in the studio is: lift towards your left shoulder (or your left eye). This helps guide the clay inwards as you pull up, creating a straighter form.

Wheel speed also plays a big role. If you’re spinning too fast, the force from the wheel can start pulling your clay outwards, making it harder to keep those walls straight. Slowing things down gives you more control over the shape you’re creating.

And one of the best ways to improve? Cut your pieces in half after a lift and look at what’s happening inside. It’s one of the easiest ways to understand where your technique is changing the form.

This time we’re exploring a simpler way to add detail to your pieces using stamps.

Not every mark needs to be bold or experimental. Sometimes a small, intentional impression can add just the right amount of character. From soft ink stamps to wooden stamps, handmade clay stamps, and rollers, there are so many ways to create patterns and textures in your work.

One of our favourite things about stamps is that they give you the chance to create something that feels completely your own. Whether it’s a repeating pattern, a maker’s mark, or a small detail hidden within a piece, these little impressions can become part of what makes your work recognisable.

Looking for some ceramic inspiration on the Sunshine Coast?

The Continuum exhibition at brings together 90 ceramic works from artists across Australia, including Simone Fraser, Jenny Mulcahy, Kim Power, Marianne Huhn, Stephanie Henricks, and more. There’s also a piece from our very own studio, so see if you can spot it when you visit!

What’s so special about exhibitions like this is seeing just how many ways clay can be used. From functional pieces like cups and bowls to life-like sculptures and abstract works, it’s a beautiful reminder of how much creativity can come from one material.

Continuum brings together ceramic artists at different stages of their practice, showcasing the connection between traditional craft, contemporary ideas, and the endless ways makers continue to explore clay.

The exhibition is on until the 13th of September with free entry, so if you’re looking for some inspiration and a good excuse to explore Noosa, make sure you go have a look 🤍

Mark making in clay | Part 4 🌿

This time we’re heading a little closer to home and using found objects from the forest around our studio.

Banksia pods, pine cones, plants, and a very special little rock have all found their way into the clay to create completely different textures. Some leave delicate patterns, some create bold impressions, and some reveal something totally unexpected once they’re pressed in.

That’s the beauty of using found objects. You can look at something from nature and have no idea what it will create until it meets the clay.

From reptile-like textures to rustic landscapes, every object has its own story to tell. What kind of vibe are you getting from these marks? 👀

How to get straight walls in your cylinder vessel 👀

It’s easy to blame your lifting technique when your walls start going wonky, but the problem can actually begin much earlier in the process.

A few things that can affect how straight your walls pull up:

Making sure your clay is properly centred before opening
Creating an even starting point so your walls aren’t already thicker on one side
Pulling slowly and consistently instead of forcing the clay

Another big factor is how you set up the bottom of your piece before your first lift. Getting that foundation right helps create the shape and structure needed for those nice straight walls.
