'I Flew As A Swan' was performed in the Black Box theatre in Nambour Queensland on Saturday 27th July 2023. Writer, performer and Tipperary native, Joanna Ryan-Purcell, was travelling through Australia for a year. She spent four months in the Sunshine Coast and met directors Mary Eggleston and Tony Kishawi. Joanna worked with Tony and Mary in developing 'I Flew As A Swan'. Joanna approached the Black Box theatre and subsequently met Lighting Designer Travis Macfarlane who created a beautiful lighting design for this show. Joanna is returning back to Ireland in January 2024 and is planning to tour this show around Ireland and further afield. Joanna wrote her own adaptation of an Irish myth, The Children of Lir. Her adaptation is called 'Children of Lir: The Journey Through The Curse'. This is a book written through prose poetry, it is in three sections and the book is illustrated with her original paintings. Joanna published this book in September 2020. Joanna and directors Tony and Mary collectively took pieces of poetry from her book and dramatised these pieces. This one woman show 'I Flew As A Swan' is a flowing series of Joanna's poetry dramatised into a poetic performance. Plans are in place to bring this show on tour, starting with Ireland in 2024.
