Dan's Music Business

Dan's Music Business Performance, recording and repair services for the entertainment industry. Welcome to Dan's Music Business, which is nicer than that other Music Business.

Repair:

Dan has a wealth of experience in the industry and is now offering the skills he has acquired as a musician, recording engineer and electronics technician as a service to artists, venues, studios and any other facets of the entertainment spectrum. As a fully qualified electronics and audio technician with almost 15 years experience, Dan has the ability to repair, service or modify your eq

uipment, whether it be an electric guitar, amplifier, microphone, effects pedal, or any other piece of electronic equipment. Formally a senior engineer for a large metropolitan commercial radio network, and more recently an electronics technician on FA/18s and F-111s, Dan has the know-how to tackle most problems. Vintage keyboards are a speciality: Hammond organs and Leslie speakers, Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer pianos, and vintage synths are all catered for. Performance:

Not only can he fix ’em, he can play ’em too! Years of gigging and recording experience are at your disposal – live or studio! As a multi-instrumentalist member of The Gin Club, Dan has toured nationally and internationally, often filling the roles of keys, guitar and bass every gig. In addition to this, Dan has played and/or recorded with the likes of You Am I, Troy Cassar-Daley, The Wilson Pickers, Andrew Morris, Danny Widdicombe, Ben Salter, Jackie Marshall, Silent Feature Era, Sue Ray and many, many more! Hammond organ is his speciality, but other keys, guitars (including pedal steel) and drums are part of the arsenal. Dan is also a classically trained percussionist with teaching, orchestral, jazz and military band experience. Recording:

With a fully equipped studio containing vintage microphones and equipment, Dan can tailor any sound to suit your production. Dan has worked as a producer and/or engineer on many projects, and – due to his knowledge of instruments and production – he is a master at identifying that elusive sound you are chasing. If you are local, you are more than welcome to come to the studio. If not, Dan can record parts for you and send them over the net. Need some overdubs to finish off your album but don't want to pay for a full studio? Dan's is the answer!

Morning all!

Plenty going on lately!

- Hammond sessions for Plastic Wood, Welcome To Television, Dave DiMarco, and Alexis and the Missing Pieces, as well as playing keys and a bit of guitar on Andrew Morris' new album.

- A bit of Leslie vocal processing for Davey Lane's soon to be released album.

- Gigs with long time compatriots Danny Widdicombe and Andrew Morris.

- Restoration of an original Ampeg Gemini VI amp, as well as repairs to Marshalls, Hiwatts and various Fender amps.

Pictures to come.

Here's a track I recently played Hammond on for Plastic Wood. The organ was recorded in my studio, the rest of the track done elsewhere.

Sounds lovely fellas, glad to have been a part of it.

Have been very busy of late with many projects. One recent job worthy of mention was a full service and re-cap of a Chilton CM 4 mixing desk for Applewood studios. It's a lovely old English desk built to BBC specs, with transformer balancing on all inputs and outputs. It was hard to give back; it would look very nice in my studio, and I dare say sound very nice also!

It's also clean out time, and I have a few items for sale. These are all mine, are fully working and recently serviced.

Laney AOR Pro Tube 100W Valve Head....$800 (A GREAT amp)
Hartke Transporter 2 x 10 Bass Cab....$200 (Excellent Cond)

Precision Audio 2 x 250W Power Amp....$250 (Used twice)

Spent a large portion of last week improving and overhauling the control room wiring and setup at Airlock studios. It's looking great, and sounding even better. Photos to come.

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. This is a video posted by a store in the US, and unfortunately these type of 'techs' are way too common, even in Australia. You should only take your amp to a qualified or HIGHLY experienced electronics technician. This guy could have very easily killed himself on camera sticking his finger into the back of the rectifier tube socket; especially holding the chassis with his other hand, even with the amp turned off. That's only one of the many things in this video that made me yell at the screen. Save a life and/or amp. Take your gear to someone with credentials.

More details to come, but on the 14th of May I'll be playing the Hammond SK-1 at a showcase night of Hammond products at Ellaways music, here in Brisbane.

If you've ever wondered why Hammonds are so special to many people, check this video out. It'll reveal all to you, and shows why there are so many of them still around. They built em' good!

Here is a scan of the Hammond SK-1 review featured in Australian Musician Magazine. The same issue also has a feature on Jim Keays "Dirty Dirty" album, which I was fortunate enough to play keys on.

Check out the latest edition of Australian Musician Magazine for my road test report of the Hammond SK-1.

It's available from musical instrument stores all over the country, and it's free!

Brisbane and Sydney stores should have copies already, Melbourne stores should see them today.
