Local writer and actor Vivienne Glance has always been inspired to write about big environmental issues, but she does it in intimate and personal ways that have the greatest impact.
Bruised is a perfect illustration of examining global warming and the changing planet through the eyes and experiences of three women.
A former astronaut (Alinta Carroll) takes her experience of watching our delicate and unique planet from a distance onto the lecture circuit (“not a lecture, a talk”, she insists); a birdwatcher (Vivienne Glance), who, with her granddaughter, walks the coastline, recognises the changing patterns of migrating birds; and a migrant (Shirley van Sanden) recalls her homeland with deep longing but learns of the destructive changes that have affected it.
Emily Jenkins plays both the granddaughter and a young waitress who longs to express to the lecturing astronaut her own feelings and fears for the future.
Through their personal stories, each one bruised by life’s challenges but tinged with hope, we recognise and relate to a changing world.
It is top-notch ensemble delivering strong performances, and what emerging director Talia Zipper lacks in directorial finesse, with an overload of unnecessary abstract movement, she makes up for with a story full of heart and hope.
