Sandgate Serenity is waiting for its forever home. This sculpture tells the story of the Sandgate foreshore at low tide. Beginning at the bottom of the sculpture we find the parkland, boardwalk and rock walls/groins, progressing to the mudflats with all of their intricate patterns, to the white froth at the water’s edge, then to the hidden depths of Moreton Bay. The sculpture reminds us that we must look after our precious oceans and the animals and plants that call it home. It is a delicate balance.
The shapes are handcrafted by my hands and these are combined with driftwood collected when foraging with my partner on the Sandgate foreshore.
I have been visiting Sandgate for over 40 years and have connections to the town through my ancestors who were early pioneers. I love walking out over the mudflats at low tide while trying to dodge the stingray holes. I walk out into the water, so it kisses my knees, raise my face and arms to the wind and let nature’s energy engulf me so I am part of it. Joy floods my body and peace settles my mind. The water doesn’t care that I am disabled - it loves me for just being, and being is all I need to be.
