Artist Louise Jenkins

Artist Louise Jenkins Based in Tenterfield, NSW, I am an artist, who draws, paints, and prints - for myself, and for sale. My time is spent adventuring.

Artist Biography
I am a studious artist, happily working on developing my perceptions of life and exploring ways to express those through art. Geographically settled in the magnificent rural landscape of Tenterfield, close to the NSW/QLD border, I have a purpose built art studio, a supportive family, and no end of inspiration. For me, being an artist is all about the experience of cycling through

challenge, exploration, refinement and expression. I enjoy handling different drawing and painting mediums, and work with charcoal, pastel, watercolour, acrylic, printing inks and mixed media, exploring the communicative values of various techniques. I strive for balance within an art work, as well as holistically across my art practice. Painting, drawing and printmaking may be listed in the visual arts, but I am very conscious of the tactility and physicality of dry vs wet, large vs small, and the characterisation provided by different tools. I also have a strong interest in the varying contributions of consciousness and sub-consciousness within a work, and the open invitation for new discoveries. The creation of each piece in a series is a truly joyful experience – full of the excitement of adventure and the satisfaction of accomplishment, but also the intense desire to create more, to reinforce and refine my new knowledge. When the series is complete, I am brimming with ideas for new challenges –perhaps integrating that knowledge with other areas of my practice, or extending on a particular idea. The urge to balance my recent activity with others in my practice is very strong however, so it is likely that I will plan a project with opposing processes to navigate my next new adventure. The pleasure that comes from living with the finished works is almost a separate and new experience. I create enough works that I can share that experience, and hope that they bring pleasure to others. It is very special when a presentation of my vision resonates with the experience and perception of strangers. I have a continued interest in taking workshops with other artists – to gain insight and appreciation into their processes and ideologies, and look for ways to strengthen my own. I am a student of life, not it’s teacher.

A firing day, hooray!

Two raku triangular vases and 3 saggars.

They've been washed, and are upside-down drying. They'll need to be thoroughly dry before I can seal them.

The only bad news is that my brand new shelf cracked. My last new shelf cracked on it's first firing too...this is becoming a sad bad habit.

I liked my first triangular vase so much, I thought I'd make some more. Here they 2 glazed and waiting for a raku firing. I thought 3 might be enough, though I find I still have an itch to make more...and maybe I will πŸ˜…

I've been busy with other things, so it's feels great to get back to the wheel and find that I can still remember where my pot throwing capabilities are up to.

My workshop for Granite Belt Support Services Inc - GBSS is over, so this is no longer required as a demonstration painting, and I am free to finish it. I am still feeling the call for some hot orange, however I now have the overall look I was after. Just a bit of finessing to go... with fresh eyes on a new day πŸ™‚

I would love to have been in Gunnedah for our exhibition opening. This month has been a bit of a juggle for me - the inability to be in 2 or 3 places at once is somewhat restrictive. πŸ˜”. The exhibition does look lovely! Well done Borderline Regional Arts Association

The enthusiasm and pride of these workshop participants is truly a delight. I feel privileged to have been their guide to finding the kind of rewarding experience that art can provide. Can't wait to see their paintings hung in the gallery, alongside the 3D creations they have made with Patena Moesker.

We are pleased to announce our collaboration with Artworks Granite Belt, resulting in the creation of exceptional art pieces. Our exhibition will take place on Friday, 27 March, from 1:00pm to 3:30pm at the Artworks location in the railway precinct. The exhibition will also be open for viewing on Saturday, 28 March, and Sunday, 29 March, from 8:30am to 11:30am.

On my easel at the moment is a painting I've been using as a demonstration piece for a series of Granite Belt Support Services Inc - GBSS workshops at Artworks Granite Belt that I am currently engaged in. You might remember me painting the background in 2021.

Everyone is doing their own painting in class, but I work on my own painting a little each week at home, then use it to provide insights - eg pointing out examples of the different painting techniques available at different stages of the painting process.

Tomorrow is their last painting day. I can't wait to see how they decide to finish their paintings. Each person takes their own, very personal route to finding deep satisfaction in the process, but also the finished piece. I'll be sharing details about their upcoming exhibition soon.

After so long in the making, I'll be excited to see my raku busts enjoying an outing!
