"For god's sake, don't glorify Gallipoli - it was a terrible fiasco, a total failure and best forgotten." - Alec Campbell, the last surviving ANZAC
Australians, especially our media, have a horrible habit of glorifying war. So many ANZACS did not choose to fight or die for their country. So many non-white soldiers are all but forgotten. When we say 'lest we forget' it means we need to remember all of it. Every person killed by every bullet from any side, every civilian who had their life destroyed.
Every person still hurt by military regimes to this day, and the part we play in continuing this pain. Being reminded of this is not an attack on freedom, it's an essential part of acknowledgement.
