Mourning Bright

Mourning Bright Art from tragedy - Beauty from death.

Mourning Bright gives new life to what the world deems dead, creating a new expression of momento mori where every creature that was, is observed for its life and its passing and reimagined into mythical expression.

Seeing a red dot next to your art is the biggest compliment you can receive as an artist. I’m very humbled right now.

Teeth hold fascination throughout our lives. They mark turning points, celebrated, mythical and mourned.
A beautiful smile is nothing without them, we nurture our bodies through their use.
We go to great lengths to ensure their health and beauty.
And yet they can be problematic throughout our lives.
From the pain of the first tooth that cuts through our gums, the milk tooth that we yank from our mouths, the braces that make our faces ache as we chase the perfect smile, the drilling of decay, the root canal and the crown.
And even after all that, more often than not, our teeth give out, give way to dentures or implants.
“Dentes Intueri” asks you to look at something so small, a single tooth, and invites you to see the journey it has taken, the role it has played and ponder on the huge impact teeth have throughout our lives.

In a departure from Mourning Bright's usual commentary on the world of death and dying "Casper and the Koala…" takes a whimsical look at the friendly ghost's relationship with his beloved Koala and their mutual love of the gothic side of life.

One of Casper's own molars and one of the Koala's own wisdom teeth are reimagined as two ghosts holding hands while exploring a magical graveyard.

Tombstones made of original 1940's dental tooth samples and a polymer handcrafted Jewish star sit on a ground of reclaimed copper-threaded acrylic, jewelled to glitter.

Our ghosts walk beneath a tree made from the rib bones of an Australian rat with glittering red flowers and a hand made polymer flower at its base.

Seed lights woven through the piece hint at a twinkling starry night.
The piece is housed in a 1940's vintage perfume bottle, a gift from Casper to his Koala to be reborn into a piece of special and highly personal art.

What can me more intimate than offering a piece of one's very body, along with a piece of one's heart? These teeth are pieces of the bodies of Casper and the Koala, joined in a love, that while imperfect, will endure until their graves.

Private commission.
