LET ME BE….. ME.

The stronger I try or want to be
The steeper the mountain becomes
Regardless of the obstacles or the reality
My inner impressionable child succumbs

My will is steadfast…
the little engine that thought it could
My brain is breakfast…
Scrambled eggs flavoured with should

The tighter I hold on, I watch my grip slip
The further I reach, my fingers start to twitch
The faster I go, the more my feet trip
The harder I seek, the greater the glitch

But what if I let go, ask my inner child
“What are you pushing me to achieve?”
I don’t need to be persecuted and trialled
I have that strength already, even if I don’t believe.

I remind myself of the chains I broke that held me down
How I rebuilt this soul from rubble and dust
That I ripped off the mask that gave me a constant frown
And then scrubbed my engines and fuselage free of rust

Yes, I once long ago was light, sunshine, a butterfly wing
Yes, I was caught and crushed with narcissistic lies and deceit
But, look how I took the pain, hurt, betrayal of cruel manipulating
And moulded, crafted a brighter soul harder than concrete

I see now that I am strong - without even trying
There is no need to go searching for power
My weeping heart and swollen eyes can finally stop crying
I am finding trust in my own formidable tower

Throw you rocks, your sticks, your doubts
My walls have been rebuilt and my moat is full
My battle hardened warriors sit tall on their mounts
Your damage is now just a fading tapestry on a old wall

I am no longer light, sunshine, a butterfly wing
I am now fire, the sun itself, the lightning and the thunder
A super nova glow, an icy planet’s asteroid ring
Planets and stars colliding in an epic celestial wonder.

Got to hand over this at Meri’s birthday, and I was just so happy that he was pleased with it. He has been such a generous and supportive person throughout my whole life and being able to immortalise him doing what he loves was such an honour.
