In 1950 when the theatre was first formed, it was called The South Coast Little Theatre. The first meeting was held in the Diggers Hall in the Southport School of Arts building in Scarborough street. The Theatre rented the hall for its early performances. The very first production was three One act plays. The first member to direct a production was Mrs Joan Ross. A Drama teacher at the nearby St Hilda's School, she remained active in the theatre until her passing in January of 1999. Her last stage performance being in Ring Round The Moon in 1995. In the early 1960s, an old scouts hall was placed on the land The building was used as a rehearsal venue and for storage of props. During this time, shows were performed in the new RSL building, built on the site of the former School of Arts building, in 1955. In November of 1969, the SCLT changed its name to the Gold Coast Little Theatre. In 1970, two old Military huts were assembled and placed on top of each other. They were made ready for the first production to be held there in May of 1970, An Evening with Ionesco directed by Mary Diehl. The last production to be performed there was Suddenly At Home in April/May of 1983 directed by Dorothy Henderson. After that time, the group used its new purpose built theatre building , built on the site of the original scout hall at 21a Scarborough Street. Able to seat 150 patrons, the theatre was officially opened in July of 1983. The first production to be staged there was The Crucible which was directed by Julanne Shearer. The old military huts were renamed Molly's after Mrs Molly Leggett who used to run the Youth theatre on Saturday mornings.
