Learn the art of pyrography and create your own skateboard design!

Discover the creative process of pyrography in this free hands-on workshop led by Iluka Sax-Williams, a Taungurung artist of the Kulin Nation and Tibrean of Zenadth Kes based in Naarm/Melbourne.

Under Iluka’s guidance, you’ll learn foundational pyrography techniques to help develop your own design, then apply your skills to create a unique skateboard deck artwork.

Open to all young people, this workshop offers a special opportunity to learn from an artist dedicated to preserving and sharing Indigenous creative practices in a contemporary context.

Use drawing, writing and performance to turn an old story into a new narrative in this two-day storytelling workshop!

Age: 12 to 15 years
Dates: 30 September and 1 October, 11am to 4pm

What happens when you take a story everyone thinks they know and ask: who gets to tell it? Who gets to be in it? Who gets to speak and who gets spoken about? Stories shape how we understand ourselves, each other and what we imagine is possible.

Using drawing, writing, improvisation and performance, we’ll create a visual storyboard and script. Where it goes will be determined by the people in the room. You might love performing or prefer drawing, writing, directing or making. You might think you’re not good at those things … yet.

There are many ways to make performance and tell a story. Bring an object connected to something you’re passionate about, obsessed with or interested in. Then we’ll challenge the gods.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Young Creatives Lab showcase last week! It was a full house at SIGNAL, and we were able to hear directly from this year's YCL cohort and witness their works-in-progress in person. Some of these works will be showing in major festivals in 2027 - stay tuned for announcements!

EOIs are open for our exhibition collaboration with Platform !

The exhibition theme is Language in Flux: a multidisciplinary exhibition that will run from 19 to 29 November 2026.

Language is never fixed. It shifts with who's speaking, who's listening, and what world they're living in. It's shaped by culture, generation, technology and community and in turn, it shapes how we connect, who we let in, and who gets left out.

Language in Flux is an open call for artists aged 16–25 to explore language not as a fixed set of rules, but as something constantly evolving, breaking down and rebuilding itself as it moves through people, communities and time.

This exhibition brings together four streamlines: General Art, Mural, Screen-based Works and Sound, across SIGNAL's spaces, public-facing screens and speakers.

Application EOIs close on Monday 28 September, 11:59pm.

Eligibility
Open to artists aged 16–25 (must be this age at the time of applying) based in or able to exhibit in Melbourne.
Open to artists at any stage of their practice.
One submission per artist.
Applicants may apply to any one of the four streamlines: General Art, Mural, Film or Sound.
There is no application fee.

Our first stage of BiBim MixUp has kicked off! Young creatives from Melbourne and Korea met online for the first time earlier this week to introduce themselves and begin working on a public arts offering which they will showcase here in Melbourne.

Presented for Melbourne Fringe, with our partners 전주문화재단, KOPIS and funding from Creative Australia, BiBim MixUp is part experiment, part cultural collaboration and part live experiment where young people take the reins.

Their collaboration culminates in a live showcase on 17 October at SIGNAL. Keep an eye out for updates from the young creatives on their progress!

Join us for an online workshop all about creating your very own comics! Led by professional comic artist Rachel Ang , this workshop is an opportunity to explore how comics help us navigate and solve personal problems.

When: Wednesday 9 September, 6pm online
Ages: 16 to 25

Bring a problem (emotional, political, financial, romantic, culinary etc) to present to a group of your creative peers, in the same way someone might ask a tarot deck for advice. You will then swap your dilemmas with your peers and attempt to create a comic strip based on someone else's prompt.

We will use comic techniques to unpack, sample and interpret these problems. By drawing someone’s dilemma you will explore possible solutions and pull from the language of dreams to create personal, essayistic and expansive comics.

Explore cyanotype techniques alongside AI image-making tools in this hands-on workshop that explores how digital and analogue processes can come together.

Along the way, we'll explore the creative possibilities of working across old and new technologies, while opening conversations about the social, environmental and ethical questions surrounding AI image generation.

You'll learn how to make an acetate negative, expose your image onto light-sensitive paper using sunlight, and develop your final print with water to reveal cyanotype's signature blue tones.

Whether you're moving out of home, cooking for yourself for the first time, or simply looking for new ideas, this hands-on workshop is a great place to start.

Led by the NEST team, you'll learn practical kitchen skills, prepare easy and affordable recipes, and discover simple ways to eat well while making the most of your ingredients. Along the way, you'll pick up tips for reducing food waste, planning meals and cooking with confidence.

Applications are currently open for an exciting residency opportunity with international artists, hosted at SIGNAL with 전주문화재단 for Melbourne Fringe.

We are recruiting 9 local participants ages 18-29 from Narrm Melbourne to work with the 9 participants who will travel here from Korea for the program.

The experience begins with two short online meetings in September to get to know your collaborators and form small teams. Then the core of the program is a 6-day intensive of daily sessions from Monday 12 October through Saturday 17 October.

Melbourne participants will receive a stipend of $50/day to offset the cost of food and travel during the intensive.

For emerging creatives, this is a chance to meet like-minded collaborators from overseas and grow your practice through peer learning. While sharing your own cultural and artistic background, you will expand the reach of your work and build your capacity for future arts exchange opportunities. We are seeking applicants who are driven by curiosity, interest in cross-cultural collaboration, and flexible open-minded ways of working.

We have had such a busy first half of the year at SIGNAL! From silver clay making to ceramic ponies, linocuts and patches, we've hosted so many incredibly talented artists and given young people in Melbourne the chance to try a new artform for free.

Our SIGNAL Studio program is for young people aged 14 to 25 years. We host free workshops on Saturdays throughout the year with skilled creatives, introducing young people to new creative art practices.
