On the bus into the city before our AWO concert at the Sydney Opera House tonight, we discovered that AWO violinist Heather Cottrell, currently Acting Deputy Concertmaster of Staatskapelle Berlin, was in the very first MICMC in 1991 with her Sydney group, Stringendo Quartet! She remembers Barry Shiffman, now Director of the Banff International String Quartet Competition, very well from the same MICMC. He was a member of the 2nd-prize-winning St Lawrence Quartet who went on to have a wonderful career. Lovely small world story.

THANKS!! To all who came along on Sunday afternoon in support of MICMC. It was such a happy occasion with a lot of love in the room. To Monica Cashin and Melissa Kwok from Music and the Brain Foundation for their organisation and gift of this concert for MICMC. To the ladies of the Country Women’s Association for the superb scones! To Matthew Min and John Ferguson for capturing the day in photos and of course to our wonderful musical colleagues on stage. It was lovely to get off our screens and be together in person!

Meeting yesterday with MICMC 2023’s
string quartet composer, Lee Bradshaw, just before a rehearsal for Sunday’s concert with MICMC 2027’s string quartet composer, Matt Laing - small world. MICMC plays an important role in the international notoriety of Australian composers just as it does for the competing groups.
