Opening Night of Architecture of Emotion

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening of Architecture of Emotion and shared this moment with us.

This exhibition marked the final presentation of Romulus Folio Gallery at 55 Gladstone Street and the closing of fourteen months of exhibitions, workshops, conversations, and cultural programming within this space. To experience this final exhibition surrounded by so many artists, residents, friends, and supporters meant a great deal to us.

The support we have received from our local community throughout this chapter has been overwhelming and deeply appreciated. To see so many people connect with the gallery, return to the space over time, and make it part of their daily lives has been incredibly meaningful. Your generosity, encouragement, and belief in what art can create within shared spaces helped shape Romulus into what it became.

A special and heartfelt thank you to the artists, Louisa Chu , Mayor Alex Makin .makin.au , the beautiful residents of The Gladstone, the Fishermans Bend Business Forum, and everyone who has shown up for us and supported us through the challenges intrinsic to transition. Your kindness, generosity, encouragement, and care have meant more to us than words can express, and we are deeply grateful.

Romulus Folio Gallery will begin de-installation at 55 Gladstone Street from 1 June 2026. Visitors are warmly welcome by appointment until 1 June 2026, with final opportunities to visit the gallery before this chapter concludes at this address.

Please visit our website, subscribe to our newsletter, and follow along to stay connected as Romulus enters its next chapter.

If you would like to be actively involved in what comes next for Romulus, we warmly invite you to send us a direct message [email protected]. We would love to hear from you.

Thank you all for being part of this journey with us. We look forward to sharing what comes next.

Thurisaz / Threshold explores tension, protection, rupture, and transformation through layered architectural textures and shifting atmospheric fields. Inspired by the rune associated with thresholds and moments of confrontation, the work engages the emotional intensity that emerges when movement into a new state becomes unavoidable.

Built through dense accumulations of mineral whites, pale blues, greys, silvers, and reflective golds, the painting carries a sense of pressure and movement held within the surface itself. Structural pathways cut across the composition like intersecting forces, while fragmented textures and reflective passages create an atmosphere that shifts subtly under changing light conditions throughout the day.

The work moves between solidity and dissolution, revealing emotional experience as something continuously shaped through challenge, transition, and becoming.

Presented as part of Architecture of Emotion, a solo exhibition by Angelina Mirabito exploring painting as a spatial and emotional system through structure, atmosphere, material, and light.

Gebo / Exchange explores the gift of connection, reciprocity, and the invisible energetic relationships formed between people, memory, space, and experience. Inspired by the seventh rune of the Elder Futhark, the work engages exchange as a living condition through which emotional experience circulates, transforms, and returns.

Interwoven directional structures move across the surface in luminous arcs and intersecting gestures, forming a shifting field of movement that feels simultaneously expansive and intimate. Layers of pale pinks, mineral whites, muted violets, soft greens, silvers, and reflective golds circulate through dense sculptural textures, allowing the painting to oscillate between atmosphere and material presence.

The crossing rune structure emerges as both pathway and meeting point, holding the emotional rhythm of giving, receiving, and relational balance within the composition. Repeated swirling gestures create currents of movement that gather and disperse across the surface, carrying traces of accumulated memory, sensation, and transformation.

Light activates embedded reflective passages throughout the work, revealing subtle tonal shifts, etched markings, and changing spatial relationships across the day. The painting unfolds as an immersive emotional environment shaped through repetition, circulation, and interconnected movement over time.

Within Architecture of Emotion, Gebo / Exchange explores how emotional experience is formed collectively through interaction, resonance, and shared presence.

Presented as part of Architecture of Emotion, a solo exhibition by Angelina Mirabito.

We are proud to announce that Romulus Folio Gallery has been shortlisted in the Small Scale category of the 2026 City of Port Phillip Design and Development Awards, presented as part of Melbourne Design Week.

The shortlist recognises the transformation of The Gladstone lobby in South Melbourne into an artist-led gallery and open studio operating across fourteen months of continuous cultural programming integrating contemporary art, design, architecture, exhibitions, workshops, and community engagement within a shared residential environment.

Developed and directed by Angelina Mirabito, PhD, and Gallery Manager Scott Ross, Romulus Folio explored how artistic and spatial interventions can shape emotional atmosphere, public interaction, and the experience of everyday space within rapidly evolving urban precincts.

The announcement coincides with Architecture of Emotion, a solo exhibition by Angelina Mirabito featuring sculptural furniture works by Mark Alexander, currently presented at Romulus Folio Gallery and concluding on 28 May 2026 before the Romulus Folio Gallery and Open Studio program at 55 Gladstone Street enters its deinstallation phase throughout June.

Winners will be announced on Thursday 21 May 2026 at St Kilda Town Hall.

Raido / Passage explores movement, direction, and the emotional experience of travelling through change. Inspired by the rune Raido, the work engages journey, rhythm, transition, and the pathways that form as experience moves forward.

A strong directional structure cuts through the surface in warm whites, creams, golds, and earthy mineral tones. The layered textures create the sense of a path being carved, followed, and formed through repetition. Areas of density and openness shift across the work, allowing movement to become both physical and emotional.

Presented as part of Architecture of Emotion, a solo exhibition by Angelina Mirabito exploring painting as a spatial and emotional system through layered material surfaces, directional movement, and atmospheric perception.

Wunjo / Alignment explores harmony, emotional resonance, and the experience of coming into balance after movement and transformation. Inspired by the eighth rune of the Elder Futhark, the work engages the moment where emotional, spatial, and energetic conditions begin to settle into coherence.

Soft mineral whites, pale violets, muted golds, blues, and blush tones circulate across the surface in rhythmic sweeping gestures that create a feeling of atmosphere in motion. Curved directional marks repeat throughout the composition like waves, currents, or breath patterns moving through space. Thick sculptural textures hold and redirect these movements, allowing the painting to oscillate between stillness and flow.

The rune structure emerges through the surface as both pathway and framework, holding the surrounding movement within a unified spatial field. Light activates subtle reflective passages embedded throughout the work, revealing changing layers, gestures, and tonal shifts across the day.

Within Architecture of Emotion, Wunjo / Alignment functions as a culmination of the first aett, carrying the emotional experience of integration, connection, rhythm, and renewal through an immersive atmospheric surface.

Presented as part of Architecture of Emotion, a solo exhibition by Angelina Mirabito.
