We’re thrilled to be featured in this week’s Ballarat Times ahead of our upcoming exhibition Outside the Lines. Thank you Ballarat Times and Evie Lamb!

Bringing together four long time friends and established artists, Janine Ronaldson, April Welfare, Sarah Lloyd and Sue Quinlan Brain, the exhibition celebrates decades of creativity, friendship and the freedom to make art without boundaries. United by their shared history at the iconic Ballarat fashion label Katsui, each artist brings a unique perspective while reflecting on place, memory and personal experience.

As April Welfare beautifully says, “It’s about giving yourself that permission to remember that as an artist you don’t have to stay in the lines.”

Thank you to Evie Lamb and the Ballarat Times for the wonderful feature. We can’t wait to share this exhibition with you.

Kim Anderson – When I Left My Body on a Distant Shore, 2020

Through exquisitely detailed drawing, Kim Anderson explores our complex relationship with the natural world, weaving together themes of vulnerability, resilience, accountability and connection.

Created following a residency on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, this powerful work emerges from a deeply personal engagement with landscape. Alone among ancient rock formations, Anderson physically immersed herself in the terrain, seeking moments of awe, solace, reverence and reflection. The resulting drawing speaks to both the fragility of the human body and the enduring strength of the natural world.

Working at the intersection of art and environmental science, Georgina creates beautifully detailed coloured pencil drawings that celebrate the flora and fauna of south-eastern Australia. With degrees in both Fine Art and Environmental Science, her practice combines careful observation with a passion for conservation, using art as a way to communicate the importance of protecting our natural world.

Included in the exhibition is Moths from Home, a preliminary series depicting three moth species photographed at her childhood home in North-East Victoria. Through these exquisite drawings, Georgina highlights the often-overlooked role insects play in maintaining healthy ecosystems, while encouraging greater appreciation for the biodiversity that surrounds us.

Alongside the moth series are botanical and entomological studies of native species, each rendered with remarkable precision and care. While these plants and animals may be considered common, they are increasingly affected by habitat loss, climate change, invasive species and other environmental pressures.

All artworks are available for purchase, including the moth series, flower studies and grasshopper illustration.

A wonderful opportunity to collect work that is both visually beautiful and environmentally significant.

The drawings of Peter Cougle invite us to pause, reflect and wonder.

Working with a whimsical spirit and a keen eye for storytelling, Peter’s drawings weave together mythology, folklore, history, spirituality and observations of the natural world. While often playful in appearance, his works quietly explore aspects of the human condition and our relationship with the world around us.

Included in Ballarat Drawers 2026 are works inspired by the ancient cave paintings of Lascaux, Celtic mythology, Asian spiritual beliefs, endangered orangutans and enigmatic contemporary figures. From the powerful symbolism of the Water Buffalo and Cirb the Ram to the mysterious Selkie and Forest Person, Peter’s subjects traverse cultures, centuries and ideas.

Executed with remarkable draftsmanship and imagination, these drawings reward close looking, revealing layers of meaning, humour and curiosity.

As Peter says, his work does not aspire to change the world, but rather to wonder at it—and in doing so, invites us to wonder too.

All artworks are available for purchase.

Outside the Lines…. Next exhibition - opens July!

Featuring Janine Ronaldson, April Welfare, Sarah Lloyd and Sue Quinlan Brain.

Janine Ronaldson… the main woman of the business, the builder of the mudbrick home at Ross Creek and the studio: Ross Creek Pottery. Built in early 80s with husband Peter Pilven. Worked side by side Peter making a range of functional wares that were sold across Australia. Continues to make highly decorative functional ceramics which we sell in our gallery space we built together in 2023. She also planted all the grevilleas which are the red plants outside the gallery and is infamous for her Guacamole dip at openings.

Janine Ronaldson’s ceramic platters celebrate colour, pattern and the joy of making. Inspired by everyday objects, domestic spaces and still-life traditions, her work combines hand-drawn imagery with bold painted surfaces to create playful and engaging compositions.

Working intuitively, Ronaldson layers stripes, grids, vessels, fruit and abstract forms across the ceramic surface, allowing each piece to evolve through a process of experimentation and discovery. Her distinctive visual language blurs the boundaries between drawing, painting and ceramics, embracing spontaneity, movement and the handmade mark.

These works will be featured in Outside the Lines, an upcoming exhibition at Ross Creek Gallery bringing together four female artists whose friendship spans many years. Having all worked at Ballarat’s iconic Katsui fashion label at various stages of their careers, the artists share a creative history while maintaining individual artistic practices. Showcasing both two- and three-dimensional works, the exhibition celebrates friendship, creativity and the enduring connections that continue to inspire artistic expression.

A glimpse into the printmaking process of Rosemary Eagle.

Rosemary’s prints are far more than a single image pulled from a plate. Each work is built through layers of experimentation, intuition and technical skill.

Using copper plates that are engraved, scratched and marked, Rosemary creates a visual language of lines, textures and gestures. Fragments of handmade papers, chine collé elements, fabrics and colour are added throughout the process, with many works passing through the press multiple times to build complex overlays and depth.

What we love about Rosemary’s practice is the balance between control and chance. The etched copper plates provide a framework, while each pass through the press introduces new possibilities, creating prints that feel alive with movement and discovery.

These images offer a rare behind-the-scenes look at her most recent prints using chine collé.

All artworks currently available at Ross Creek Gallery.

Open weekends 11am–4pm and by appointment.

We are thrilled to have a selection of prints by Rosemary Eagle available in the Ross Creek Gallery print stand. We have admired Rosemary’s work for many years and are delighted to share these beautiful pieces with visitors to the gallery.

Based in Ararat, Rosemary works from a unique home studio that was once part of the local baker’s horse stables, built in 1926. Surrounded by the landscapes of the Grampians region, her abstract monoprints and monotypes are inspired by places she has visited, moments she has experienced, and the ever-changing environment around her.

Rosemary’s work is rich with layers of colour, texture and atmosphere, created through an experimental printmaking process involving multiple plates and repeated runs through the press. Her practice embraces risk-taking and discovery, resulting in works that feel both intuitive and deeply considered.

Rosemary also lives with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), and aspects of her lived experience are often reflected in the evocative titles and emotional qualities of her work.

If you’re visiting Ross Creek Gallery, be sure to spend some time exploring these wonderful prints and better yet, buy one!

Peter Cougle’s Lascaux Cow I–IV draws inspiration from the ancient cave paintings of Lascaux, France—some of the earliest known artworks created by humans. Using charcoal and watercolour on Fabriano Rosaspino paper, these works reimagine prehistoric cattle through a contemporary lens, reflecting on our enduring connection to animals, history and storytelling.
