Kaiela Arts

Kaiela Arts Kaiela Arts is a place for First Peoples with connections to Yorta Yorta Country, to create art and share their stories.

Established in 2006, Kaiela Arts is an Aboriginal art centre located in Shepparton situated on the traditional lands of the Yorta Yorta Nation. Our work drives important outcomes for local Aboriginal artists and our community. Located on the ground floor of the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM), Kaiela Arts is a gallery, shop and studio space. Our storytelling and culture are embedded throughout the mus

eum with brass and granite inlays in the floor and screen-printed fabrics that feature designs by our artists. Our art centre offers visitors an opportunity to view and purchase authentic Aboriginal art. Kaiela Arts differentiates itself as promoting the traditional linear and Xray styles of the South-eastern Aboriginal people. These styles come from Yorta Yorta Country and resonate thousands of years of cultural practises. Kaiela Arts provides an important space for local Aboriginal artists and community to connect to culture through the arts. We strengthen community by sharing culture, learning from our past and empowering future generations. Our studio space is used by artists to explore a variety of traditional and contemporary art making techniques including painting, ceramics, woodwork, printing and fashion. We create ideas by working with lessons from the land to create and share quality artwork. Annually we host exhibitions and events during the Shepparton Festival. In Autumn, our popular Turtle Muster brings the wider community into the gallery

Glennys Briggs & Ian Muir working with James Henry, Ebony Joachim and Tarli Dean Atkinson on the Yenebenal Language Songbook project.

"Ebony and James hosted another Yenbenal Songbook Workshop. This time Glennys Briggs joined in on the fun of writing songs in language. Ebony and James worked with Glennys to help shape songs that she had been working on. We had a lot of practicing and laughs happening before doing a demo recording for her to go away with. We look forward to seeing The Muirs taking the songs on tour."

Over the past few months, our artists Ally Knight (Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung, Kamilaroi) and Melinda Solomon (Eastern Kuku Yalanji, Girramay) have been busy in the studio bringing our newest Bupolga ceramic collection to life.

Featuring hand-crafted mugs, bowls and plates, Ally and Melinda have been exploring new ways to bring together their ceramic and weaving practices. Each piece is impressed with intricate woven designs, honouring their long-lasting weaving traditions, knowledge and stories carried by the women of their communities.

Ally shares:

"It's been exciting to bring together the two mediums I love most - ceramics and weaving - to honour our weaving practice and the stories of the women who have carried these traditions for generations. It's an opportunity to explore new ways of storytelling while continuing to honour our old practices."

This week we dropped off a beautiful collection of artworks to the friendly team (pictured) at The Foundry Arts Space for their 2026 NAIDOC exhibition.

This annual NAIDOC exhibition has been running for 15 years and is organised by Yorta Yorta Elders Vicki Walker and Denise Morgan-Bulled, two very special women who are keeping culture strong, visible and celebrated in Echuca. We acknowledge their tireless commitment to community and are grateful for all they do.

Last year’s NAIDOC exhibition was all about women and their creative and cultural practices and this year's exhibition is all male featuring artworks from local First Nations community members, artists, St. Joseph's College students and a memory wall dedicated to honouring local heroes.

Everyone is welcome to attend the exhibition opening celebration on Friday 19 June, 6pm at The Foundry Art Space 13–17 Murray Esplanade, Echuca

There'll be Yidaki playing on arrival, an acoustic set from Narjic Day Burns, beautiful food and of course incredible art including Kaiela Arts artists Brett Wilson, Jack Anselmi and Paul Hamlyn.

The exhibition runs June 12 –July 12 2026 (Closed Tuesdays during Vic school term)

We strongly encourage everyone to get along and support this exhibition.

With great sadness, Kaiela Arts Board and staff acknowledge the passing of Gunditjmara, Wemba Wemba and Yorta Yorta artist Tommy Day, also known as Jirri Jirri.

Tom was an incredible artist, storyteller and cultural man and this resonates in every artwork he created, large and small. He was a real gentleman, generous with his knowledge and deeply respected across our communities and the art world. His presence was felt in every space he walked into, and his legacy will continue for years to come. We will miss his visits to Kaiela Arts which were always full of yarns, laughs, new ideas and inspiration.

Our thoughts are with Tom's family, and we send our heartfelt condolences to the Day and Atkinson families at this heartbreaking time. πŸ–€

In early May, our Breakfast with Purpose brought together 70 local businesses and community leaders at Kaiela Arts to talk about First Nations economic inclusion in the Goulburn Murray region.

The event was organised with Institute and Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation for Plan Champions for the Goulburn Murray Regional Prosperity Plan, alongside local Aboriginal business owners and entrepreneurs.

Our Art Centre Manager Anita Larkin spoke about how the Plan challenges zero-sum thinking around economic growth, reframing First Nations culture and identity as regional assets rather than deficits. "Every time Kaiela Arts sells an artwork, delivers a program, employs an Aboriginal person, we are not taking something from this region, we are adding to it," she said.

We also heard from our Curator & Gallery Manager Chloe Jones and Marketing and Development Trainee Mya Falla on their journeys from being young program participants and artists, to now being staff and emerging cultural leaders. Dan Wright from Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation talked about the Yirramboi Business Initiative and Dr Paul Briggs delivered a keynote reflecting on what the Prosperity Plan represents in the broader sweep of the region's history and future.

It is part of an ongoing legacy, and a vision in which our region becomes a national example of what is achievable when a community pulls together, commits to real change, respects First Nations culture and ensures full economic access for First Nations peoples.

The event closed with a call to action for Plan Champions in the room to consider how their own organisations can contribute to keeping the Plan's momentum strong.

What a fantastic conversation at last week's Arts and Culture Roundtable!

It was great to hear from educators, artists, cultural organisations, industry representatives and community leaders who share a passion for supporting arts and culture across our region.

The discussion highlighted what makes our community so special – strong connections, rich cultural diversity, strong creative activity, and a genuine appreciation for the arts in all their forms.

One of the most exciting themes was the enthusiasm of young people for creative careers and the opportunities to strengthen pathways from school to university and into meaningful work. We also explored the role arts education plays in developing creativity, critical thinking, storytelling and ethical decision-making in an increasingly AI-driven world.

Thank you to everyone who shared their perspectives, experiences and ideas. We're excited to continue these conversations and help shape a vibrant future for arts and culture in our region.
