Estrangement and the Loss of Ordinary Family Life

Parents feel devastated by not being invited to a wedding, missing a graduation, or being cut off from their grandchildren. Those losses are enormous, but visible. They have names.

What is equally profound is the disappearance of the ordinary.

No random texts.
No photos of the dog.
No asking for a recipe.
No stopping by to borrow something.
No hearing about annoying coworkers or a child’s soccer game.
No casual “How are you?” with no agenda attached.

The thousands of tiny interactions that quietly reassure us that we belong to one another.

Modern culture often minimizes this kind of grief because ordinary family connection is now treated as optional, secondary to personal fulfillment, boundaries, or emotional optimization.

But ordinary family life is profound. Repeated contact, however mundane is part of how we regulate ourselves emotionally across generations. It creates continuity. Familiarity. Identity. A sense that someone somewhere knows our history without explanation.
