Five things you never knew about Powderfinger

1.
Their first gig was tiny. Powderfinger’s first-ever show was a 1989 house party for only about 10–15 people. The original version was a three-piece playing Neil Young, R.E.M. and Sunnyboys covers through a homemade PA.

2.
Their debut EP became rare partly because someone stole most of it. Their 1992 self-funded “Blue EP” was a serious DIY job: John Collins designed the cover, the band assembled the CDs themselves, and then most copies were reportedly stolen, turning it into a collector’s item.

3.
Their first Sydney gig had seven people in the crowd. One of those seven was future Australian chart-topper Alex Lloyd. Not exactly an arena-rock beginning.

4.
They road-tested Internationalist songs under a fake name. Before releasing the album, they played a secret gig at the Crash and Burn as “Terry and the Econodogs”, trying out early versions of tracks including “Good Day Ray,” “Celebrity Head” and “The Day You Come.”

5.
Tom Cruise helped get them onto a Hollywood blockbuster soundtrack. According to Powderfinger’s own bio, Cruise became a fan and wanted one of their songs for Mission: Impossible II; “My Kind of Scene” ended up on the soundtrack alongside Metallica, Foo Fighters and Limp Bizkit.
