EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHT | The Art of the Uncanny

In Frank Mesaric's paintings, nothing is quite what it seems. A stainless steel bowl. A length of rubber tubing. A white sheet draped across a wall. Objects you might find in any home - until they appear together on a canvas, and something shifts.

Mesaric works with the concept of the uncanny - the strange, prickling feeling when the familiar becomes suddenly, inexplicably wrong. He arrived at it through decades of practice, not theory. A bowl of water becomes something sinister. A child in a gasmask stands at the centre of history. It is one of the defining qualities of GIPPSLAND GOTHIC, and it stays with you long after you leave the gallery. Plan a visit this week.

EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHT | What is Gippsland Gothic?

Gothic doesn't always mean castles and creatures of the night. In Gippsland, the gothic is something subtler and far more unsettling - it lives in the wetlands at dusk, the overcast skies above Sale, the silhouette of a farm building in winter, the desolate stretch of paddock before the rain. Frank Mesaric has painted this world for decades, transforming the familiar landscape into something that unsettles, haunts and endures.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | Frank Mesaric

Born in Sale. Raised in Morwell. Art teacher for over three decades. A lifetime of making paintings in a purpose-built studio just outside Sale, rising at 3am to work while the rest of the world is still asleep.

Frank Mesaric is one of Gippsland's most significant painters - and GIPPSLAND GOTHIC is his most comprehensive exhibition yet. Informed by old master technique, his Slovenian migrant heritage, and a deeply Gothic sense of this landscape, his paintings sit with discomfort and ask you to stay a while. They are not for the faint of heart. But they are impossible to forget.

What a night. The doors opened, the art spoke - and Gippsland’s arts community showed up in full force to celebrate one of their own. Three gallery spaces. And Frank Mesaric in the room surrounded by decades of work.

ARTIST WORKSHOP | with Raymond Young

Get creative, have a yarn and paint alongside artist Raymond Young on Monday 29 June.

Ray is a proud Gunditjmara Gunai Yorta Yorta man whose art is shaped by Indigenous culture and country. In this all-ages, all-skill-levels workshop, participants will learn Ray's process and techniques - and leave with their own painting inspired by his style.

The day also includes a cultural cook in the ground (kup murri), with lunch served on completion. All materials supplied. Children must be supervised by a responsible adult.
