WHAT’S THE SHOW:
IMMERSIVE and IMPRESSIVE:
…the audience was introduced into the world in a truly magical and harmonious way…
Shakespeare would have been impressed seeing this interpretation of Romeo and Juliet through Come you Spirits eyes. And he would have left feeling peaceful and fulfilled, at a night witnessing a tale of comedy and tragedy, ending with a grounding and beautiful meditation of gratitude to people and nature. This is a gorgeous production of Romeo and Juliet, do not miss seeing this…
Jo Mayer took on dual roles as Juliet’s Nurse and Tybalt. Her depiction of The Nurse was warm and nurturing, serving as a trusted confidante to Juliet. In stark contrast, Mayer brought great energy and passion to her portrayal of Tybalt, capturing their fiery temperament…
Edwards was riveting as she faced the heartbreaking choice of following her father’s wishes of Juliet marrying a man he had chosen that she did not love, or face an uncertain future. Lord Capulet, played with a fierceness by Charles Mayer, had a cold stage presence which demanded obedience, or Juliet would be disowned and thrown out onto the street to survive on her own. This scene was particularly strong, and clearly conveyed as the turning point for Juliet’s future plans…
Lighting Design was by Adam Applebaum and the mood he created set the play’s authenticity in the barren post-apocalyptic Verona.
ON THE HOUSE:
The cast were all delightfully warm, entertaining and gave it their all. Five Stars.
STAGE WHISPERS:
the production feels raw, immediate and deeply personal.
Charles Mayer, playing both Lord Capulet and the Friar, pulls double duty with a commanding stage presence. He shifts seamlessly between the two roles, using distinct vocal and physical choices to clearly define each character while driving the drama forward.
Jo Mayer plays both the Nurse and Tybalt with fierce commitment. She moves from Tybalt’s brutal aggression to the emotional warmth of the Nurse with remarkable ease, pouring enormous energy into every scene. From prologue to epilogue, Mayer acts as the emotional engine of the production, grounding the chaos of the wasteland with humanity and heart.
Ciaran O’Riordan brings a youthful energy to Romeo… capturing his impulsive nature and emotional vulnerability, the boyish naivety making the whirlwind romance feel genuine and believable… there is a sincerity and warmth to O’Riordan’s portrayal that keeps the audience invested in Romeo’s journey.
SYDNEY ARTS GUIDE:
By the tragic finale, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. A rollercoaster of love, fury, and beauty, that reminds us exactly why this tale, has captivated hearts for centuries. a production that redefines passion.
