o the community. Below is the original concept of the organisation and the sought for venue. Russell Island is home to many creative and culturally diverse people. Russell Island Cultural Centre was a proposed space where people can meet and create, see and purchase each other's creations and get information about the island and see its history all in one place. With a café, gift shop and gallery locals and visitors alike can relax in a visually stimulating environment, and can support local artists and craftspeople. The information centre will provide advice to locals and visitors about how to get around and what's on. The museum will house the Southern Moreton Bay Island's (SMBI) museum collection. The gallery will be a commercial outlet for local artists to exhibit their work. The gift shop will be a commercial outlet for souvenirs and craft made by SMBI artists. The art studios will be available for art groups and individuals to hire for regular sessions or occasional workshops. The meeting room will be available for hire for small groups for meetings, interviews and information sessions. The grounds and sculpture garden will provide a pleasant area to stroll and enjoy outdoor art, with family friendly picnic facilities. Redland City Council had offered us the use of a site in principle. Funding for building and operating the centre was to be our responsibility and was expected to come through grants, sponsorship and fund-raising activities. Concept plans were drawn and designed in such a way that the centre could be built in stages as funding becomes available. It was proposed that the information centre and commercial areas including café, gift shop and gallery would be in stage one. The museum section is also a priority as the current site for the museum is inadequate to safely store its collection. Lastly the workshops will be built, providing much needed communal space where artists can work together for inspiration, sharing of ideas and knowledge, and the social benefits which result. Now that Kennedy Farm has been secured for the Arts group called RICARTS (Russell Island Community Arts), we at least are satisfied that some of our goals have been achieved.
