Tumblegold - 1200x600 (ish)

Made from recycled ♻️ pine. The other parts of those pine trees are sitting in core trays in the Pilbara as core blocks. Core blocks are little blocks of wood which drillers use to write depth intervals on. When they drill rock core from mine exploration work the rock samples obtained are placed in trays, with core blocks to help the geologists know what depth samples come from.

The factory that makes the blocks is near where I live and they wind up with a waste strip of wood 5 to 15mm thick. Waste I am happy to recycle into this.

Both the blocks and this peice are still in WA :)

It's very satisfying to finish and deliver something so beautiful. I really wanted this barn door commission to be special and found an odd lump of curly marri for the main features. Thanks for the wood 🦆🦆

I had to slice it into 2mm veneers on the bandsaw to have enough of the good stuff and that gave plenty of opportunities for book matching.

And so much chatoyance! (chatoyance is the alternating or irregular light refraction that occurs due to the wood fibres orientation changing. Due to variations in wood growth patterns light reflects differently off various areas of the wood. It is similar to how light creates interesting varied patterns when reflecting off a disco ball.)

The outer frame is made of WA blackbutt with lots of nice wormy holes.

All up it was a wonderful and challenging project. I'm left with a workshop full of scraps which I am going to whip up into a smaller peice. Best to do that straight away, my crow brain won't let me throw anything shiny and nice away but I also don't want a bag of scrap wood lying around for years!

Door and frame update, the door is installed and fits beautifully into the frame that I made out of 40 year old door frame scraps. There is a very certain type of satisfaction felt from a well hung door, something like joy, happiness, and relief!

I've been a bit absent from posting as I have had pneumonia during a very busy work season but I'm excited to share some big things soon!!

Updates coming soon :)

I'm testing some different finishes for the next barn door commission. This is curly marri with a more muted raw matt oil and also with a feature popping razzle-dazzle clear satin oil.

I do like the razzle dazzle. I'm very chuffed with how this came out!

I had these old door frame pieces from a big double entrance door that was replaced on the front of our house. There was no way my crow brain was going to let all that prime jarrah get thrown away. Now I am basking in the delicious "hoarders gloat" having finally reused some trash I insisted on keeping.😁

The second pic kind of shows the frame I made. Next step, setting the frame and mounting the door.

I haven't had much time for art as we renovated a small 40 year old tool shed into a nice small overnighter for guests. The bearers and joists on one end had rotted away reducing the jarrah hardwood to something like spongecake. There was also some intense termite damage around the door frame.

I've patched up the floor, next step is the door frame which I am going to attempt to build.

I picked up some marri offcuts from which are perfect for the next barn door I'll be making. I'm very keen to see what comes of this curly marri block. Should be some nice figure hidden in there.

"Qube Shpangled Banner"

Nationalism is weird. At its best it can unify people and be a feature of movements for freedom and justice and drive revolutions. At its worst it violently divides people and is used to legitimise racism, attack minorities, and undermine human rights.

It's propoganda and displays of the latter that freak me out the most. Life is hard enough for everyone. There's little need to intentionally be an as***le to someone else.

Perhaps we need some kind of "Planetism" that every earthling could get behind so we could all feel a bit more togetherness (at least until some aliens turn up and we then need to adjust to some form of "galactism").

Perhaps then Universalism?

I put this together with some leftover parts from another project but it hit a nerve inside me. The Gold. The structures of our society, capitalist commercialism, inherently promoting a trend towards a base of greed and selfishness. Or is the gold, the good? The same structure with a golden base like the glorious high minded values buried in each nations constitution, aiming to improve the lives of citizens.

You Decide.

"QSB Pillars" this is part of the QSB series (qube shpangled banner). After I make these they sit in our living room for a few weeks being rotated around every few days. It might sound weird but the whole character of the peice changes by rotating it around.

In these two the structure is based around the vertical pillars, the breakout cubes interrupting the order.

which way would you orient them?

"QSB Cube Rush" this is part of the QSB series (qube shpangled banner). After I make these they sit in our living room for a few weeks being rotated around every few days. It might sound weird but the whole character of the peice changes by rotating it around. Sometimes it feels more masculine or feminine coming from the left or right or from the top or bottom.

I'd love to know if changing the orientation makes the pieces feel different to you. Which way would you hang them?

These 4 all start at either 30 or 60 degree rotations. There are slight differences in each one as I constantly want to try something different.

The angled lines imply a force or movement directing the eye, the breakout cubes interrupting that to catch the vision and impede this movement. Accents of gold force a pause before the next movement on.

Enjoy!
