Designed for performers ready to explore dynamic, embodied stage presence and detailed vocal work at an advanced level, using Suzuki training as a foundation. These sessions dive into all three phases of the work - core training, bridging explorations, and scene work. Participants should demonstrate a strong commitment to physical and vocal practice, and a readiness to channel it into high-level, embodied performance. This training process is based on three decades of research with a focus on how artists can use these tools to create work and realise their full expressive potential on stage.
The training sessions will progress through three interconnected phases:
- Core Training
- Bridging Explorations
- Composition & Scene Work
Core Training lays the foundation, based on the FIVE main exercises of the Suzuki Actor Training Method as developed by SCOT, and the Viewpoints. Here, we cultivate the essential skills and awarenesses that give an actor power and presence: energy, focus, specificity, and the deep connection between body, breath and voice.
Bridging Explorations carry the fundamentals into broader territory. Actors engage with dynamic physical structures that encourage interpretation, risk-taking, and expressive play, always rooted in core technique. The dialogue between Suzuki and Viewpoints enriches this process. This phase also introduces Simon's Vocal Model which is new way of applying Suzuki-based voice work.
Composition & Scene Work brings it all together in the act of making theatre, a simulated rehearsal process. We will create new material, then refine it in a collaborative actor–director dialogue. The work in this stage is still grounded in the principles of Core Training, which serve as the framework upon which the performance is built and refined.
