GABBY TAYLOR-SMITH – Ensemble / Mary Magdalene (Understudy)

Jesus Christ Superstar | Riverside Theatre Return Season

For Gabby Taylor-Smith, Jesus Christ Superstar was not only her first musical - it became an experience that challenged her, inspired her and showed her what she was truly capable of.

“JCS has meant so much to me. The fact I was able to do it with some of my best friends made it so special.”

Stepping into the role of Mary Magdalene was something Gabby never took lightly.

“I was very intimidated by the idea, but I’m so glad I had the opportunity because it taught me so much about myself and my abilities. Taking a bow as Mary made me feel so proud of myself.”

As part of the ensemble, Gabby explored a character fascinated by Jesus and the world changing around her.

“She is strong, powerful and feminine. She does what she needs to survive and embraces who she is. She is very different to who I am as a person, so finding that confidence and femininity was a challenge - but such an exciting one.”

For Gabby, the reason audiences connect so deeply with Jesus Christ Superstar comes down to one thing — humanity.

“Audiences love seeing raw emotion — something they can connect with. The character journeys, the performances, the way the show looked and sounded, and the incredible quality of this cast made it something really special.”

Looking back on the journey, Gabby says the bond created within this company is something audiences could feel from their seats.

“The cast, production team and crew put their hearts and souls into this show. Night after night, no matter how many times we had watched it, the ending would still bring us to tears.”

“The closeness of this cast and the support we showed each other was like nothing else — and that’s what I would want people to know.”

BROOKE COTTON – Ensemble

Jesus Christ Superstar | Riverside Theatre Return Season

For Brooke Cotton, Jesus Christ Superstar has been a journey unlike anyone else in the cast — first experiencing the magic from behind the scenes, and now stepping into the spotlight.

“While I wasn’t part of the original cast in the first season, I had the opportunity to work backstage as stage crew. Watching everyone shine on stage and seeing how much joy they brought to audiences was incredibly rewarding.”

Being backstage each night gave Brooke a front row seat to the impact this production had on audiences.

“Hearing the audience’s reactions every night was such a special experience and only deepened my appreciation for the show. Now that I have the chance to join everyone on stage, I’m even more excited to be part of the magic and create new memories alongside this amazing company.”

For Brooke, creating her character has meant exploring strength, determination and curiosity in the world surrounding Jesus.

“She is strong and confident. She knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to work hard to achieve it, no matter what challenges she faces. There’s resilience and purpose in her, but she remains kind and caring towards those around her.”

Like many in the story, Brooke’s character is searching for answers.

“She is deeply curious about Jesus — she wants to understand who he is, why people are drawn to him and what makes him such a powerful presence”.

“I was thrilled when I heard it was coming back, even more thrilled when I learned they were looking for someone to join the cast, and absolutely over the moon when I was asked to be part of it.”

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Roger McKenzie last Sunday.

While Roger was no longer an active member of Rockdale Musical Society, his legacy will forever remain woven into the fabric of who we are and the history we proudly carry forward.

Roger’s journey in community theatre began with Rockdale Musical Society, where his passion, creativity and dedication shone both on and off the stage. Over the years he performed, designed costumes, promoted productions and shared his vision as a director.

When one RMS founding member suggested that Roger take the reins and help guide the future of the Society, Roger stepped forward, forming a committee and leading Rockdale Musical Society into a new chapter with great success.

His contribution helped shape the foundations that generations of performers, creatives and audiences have enjoyed since. Community theatre is built by people who give their time, talent and heart, and Roger was one of those people.

On behalf of everyone at Rockdale Musical Society, past and present, we extend our deepest condolences to Roger’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of sharing the stage and the journey with him.

Thank you, Roger, for your passion, your leadership and your lasting contribution to the RMS story. ❤️

MARIO NOWFAL - Priest

Jesus Christ Superstar | Riverside Theatre Return Season

For Mario Nowfal, being part of Jesus Christ Superstar came at exactly the right moment — becoming much more than just another show.

“This show found me at a time of enormous change. It reminded me that even in life’s hardest chapters, art can give us purpose, friendship and somewhere to belong. I’ll never forget taking our final bow and realising how much we’d all grown together.”

Playing one of Jesus’ Apostles meant stepping into a story of devotion, uncertainty and loyalty — but Mario admits there was also another very important preparation process…

“Making sure I didn’t miss the gym so my arms looked massive on stage!” 😂

Beyond the laughs, Mario says the reason Jesus Christ Superstar continues to connect with audiences decades later is because of the emotions we all recognise.

“At its heart, this story is about love, loyalty, doubt and sacrifice — things we all wrestle with. Our production feels honest, and audiences recognise pieces of themselves in it.”

When Mario found out this acclaimed production would have another life on the Riverside Theatre stage, his reaction summed it up perfectly:

“THAT’S RIGHT! JUSTICE!” 🙌

For Mario, what makes this production special isn’t just what happens under the lights — it’s the people standing beside him.

“Every person on that stage gave more than their talent — they gave pieces of their hearts. What you’re seeing isn’t just a performance; it’s a family telling a story they truly believe in.”

Jesus Christ Superstar | Riverside Theatre Return Season

For Craig Bulmer, being part of Jesus Christ Superstar has been a chance to rediscover his love of performing and create memories that will last a lifetime.

“Doing JCS has reignited my musical theatre experience. It challenged me to sing in public again — something I absolutely love but have sometimes lacked confidence in. More than anything, it has been a dream come true to perform on stage with my eldest daughter for the first time.”

Taking on the role of a Priest, Craig explored the complexity behind those who opposed Jesus and the fear driving their decisions.

“The Priests believed they were protecting their people and their Jewish faith. As members of the Sanhedrin, they feared that someone like Jesus could bring the attention of the Romans and threaten everything they knew. The challenge was finding how to portray someone so serious, determined and callous — while understanding why they believed they were doing the right thing.”

Craig believes the power of Jesus Christ Superstar lies in the conversations it creates.

“This show explores an age-old discussion around faith, told through the eyes of Judas. What makes this production special is the way it presents the full journey, including the resurrection. For people of faith, that moment is incredibly powerful. But regardless of your beliefs, the set, the talent, the staging and the direction create something truly spectacular.”

When Craig found out the production was returning to Riverside Theatre, his reaction was pure excitement.

“I was over the moon — not just for myself, but for all the young performers involved who are studying musical theatre, drama, teaching and the arts. Opportunities like this are rare, and I am so grateful that at my age I get to be part of something so remarkably professional.”

And how does Craig describe this cast and production?

“It’s off the charts. The talent is insane and the Society has been so professional. I feel incredibly blessed to work alongside these amazingly talented people.”

Jesus Christ Superstar | Riverside Theatre Return Season

For Sage Howell, being part of Jesus Christ Superstar has been an experience filled with incredible memories, new friendships and a deeper connection to this iconic story.

“This show has meant so much to me — from falling in love with the music, to making unforgettable backstage memories, learning more about the story of Christ, and forming friendships with some pretty amazing people.”

As part of the ensemble, Sage discovered that telling this story was about much more than simply being in the crowd — it was about understanding the complicated emotions of those surrounding Jesus.

“It was such an interesting challenge to explore the journey of Jesus’ followers. How can someone go from loving devotion to hatred so quickly? How can adoration shift into desperation? Finding that emotional journey was such a powerful part of bringing this story to life.”

When the cast found out the production would return for a special season at Riverside Theatres, it was a moment of excitement and pride.

“I was so excited when I found out we would be bringing the show to Riverside Theatre. It’s such a rare opportunity for a community theatre production to have another life on a stage like this — and the fact we were asked to return makes it even more special.”

Sage says what audiences see on stage is only possible because of the dedication of so many people behind the scenes.

“This show could not have been brought to life without the incredible work of everyone involved — the production team, costumes, stage crew, orchestra, cast and every single person who helped create this world.”

For Tim Wotherspoon, returning to Jesus Christ Superstar has been an experience he won’t forget.

“Being part of this production has been incredible. Having performed the show before, it was exciting to return to something I love — but this time I also had the opportunity to challenge myself in a new way as an understudy.”

Taking on the role of Apostle Andrew while also understudying Annas gave Tim the chance to explore two very different sides of this powerful story.

“Andrew is loyal, supportive and deeply committed to those around him, while Annas brings confidence and authority. Discovering how differently they see the world and finding ways to bring both characters to life has been incredibly rewarding.”
