Last night my beginners started learning the Shirley Temple step for the first time.
Shirley Temple made it look effortless.

Today is International Tap Dance Day, the birthday of Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson, one of the people who changed tap dancing forever.

This week we’re celebrating in every class, learning a Bill Robinson time step, and our beginners are learning the Shirley Temple, the step he and Shirley Temple often danced together. Iconic.

Tap dance has always been passed on this way. Person to person. Teacher to student. Generation to generation. That’s how it moves forward. That’s how it’s still here.

Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson had a favourite expression. ‘Everthing’s Copasetic’, meaning everything is fine, everything is as it should be.

Seven days after he was buried, a group of tap dance and musical artists formed a social and benevolent club in his memory and they named themselves after it, The Copasetics. Their pledge was to promote fellowship and preserve his legacy.

Next week every class at our studio will be learning steps Bill Robinson was renowned for.
