Have you ever noticed how many people describe themselves by their personality as if it's something they were born with?
"I'm just an anxious person."
"I'm shy."
"I've never been confident."
"That's just who I am."
But what if that's not actually true?
What if your personality is simply your personal reality? A collection of beliefs, thoughts, emotions, behaviours, habits, and experiences that you've accumulated throughout your life.
When you were born, you didn't arrive with anxiety. You didn't arrive worrying about what people thought of you. You didn't arrive with self doubt, low confidence, fear of rejection, or limiting beliefs. Those things were learned over time through your experiences, your upbringing, the people around you, the environment you grew up in, and the meaning you gave to different events in your life.
Your personality has been shaped by thousands of moments. The praise you received. The criticism you received. The successes. The failures. The lessons. The disappointments. The conversations. The beliefs you adopted from family, friends, teachers, and society. All of these experiences helped create the version of you that exists today.
The interesting thing is that many people act as though their personality is fixed, yet the evidence shows otherwise. Think back five years. Are you exactly the same person you were back then? Probably not. Your opinions have changed. Your beliefs have changed. Your confidence has changed. Your priorities have changed. Even the way you see the world has changed.
There may have been a time in your life when you felt more confident than you do now. There may have been a time when you didn't struggle with anxiety. There may have been a time when you were more outgoing, more adventurous, or more willing to take risks. Equally, there may have been times when you were less confident than you are today.
The point is that your personality has never stopped changing.
So maybe the real question isn't "Who am I?"
Maybe the better question is, "Who am I becoming?"
Because if your personality was shaped by experiences, then it can also be reshaped. If beliefs can be learned, they can be unlearned. If patterns can be created, they can be changed.
You are not stuck with the personality you have today.
You are a work in progress, and the person you become tomorrow is being shaped by the thoughts, emotions, decisions, and experiences you choose today.
