JUNE AT THE QUORN SILO โ€” Bitter Springs in Translation, Extended
We have great news. By popular demand, the Bitter Springs documentary continues into June at the Quorn Silo Light Show.
Please note the show time has changed for June. The documentary now starts later in the evening as we follow the sun into winter.
This is a rare chance to see a piece of living history under the stars. In 1949, Bitter Springs was filmed right here in and around Quorn, with 120 Anangu men, women and children as its cast. For 77 years, their words went untranslated. This documentary begins to change that.
ABC North & West recently featured the story of the translation project, bringing this remarkable piece of South Australian history to a wider audience.
Free. Every night throughout June. Under the stars.

A little local favour to ask from the Quorn community. โค๏ธ
On Monday night, 18 May, ABC journalist Declan Durrant is coming to Quorn to film a story connected to the Bitter Springs documentary project currently playing at Quorn Silo Light Show, and weโ€™d love to capture some footage of people watching it. Monday nights are usually quieter so I am hoping you can help.
Weโ€™re hoping to gather a small โ€œrent-a-crowdโ€ of friends, locals and visitors to help bring the space to life for filming.

๐Ÿ“… Monday 18 May 2026
๐Ÿ•  Arrive around 5:40pm
๐ŸŽฌ Filming until approximately 6:30pm
Come use the seats there at the show or BYO your own. You donโ€™t need to do anything special, just come along, enjoy the show, chat, and help us show the atmosphere and community spirit that makes Quorn so special.
Warm jackets recommended, itโ€™ll probably be chilly!
Weโ€™d really appreciate the support. Thanks everyone.

๐Ÿ“ฝ MAY AT THE QUORN SILO โ€” Bitter Springs in Translation
25 minute documentary added to the nightly show of stories under the stars.

In 1949, the feature film Bitter Springs was shot in and around Quorn โ€” the first feature film ever made in the Flinders Ranges. Some local residents still carry memories of those days when the cameras came to town.

This SA History Month, the Quorn Silo Light Show presents a new 25-minute work featuring extracts from the 1949 film, interviews with Quorn residents who remember the production, and the beginning of something significant: the first translation of the Pitjantjatjara language spoken by the Anangu cast, undertaken with language specialists from Iwiri Aboriginal Corporation.

For 77 years, the words of the Anangu cast went untranslated. Now, for the first time, we're beginning to understand what they said.

Made in South Australia by Illuminart stories in light, assisted by History Trust of South Australia History grant and Marlinga Piling Trust, Iwiri Language Corporation and Dr Maggie Brady's research.

Free. Every night throughout May. Under the stars.

Anzac Reflections, Lest We Forget is showing on the Quorn Silos this week, and on Anzac morning also when the community will gather before sunrise to mark the day together.
There is something quietly special about stories told in light on a structure that has stood at the heart of a country town for decade. The Quorn Local History Group contributed photographs and personal stories for this projection, and that generosity shows in every frame, animated by Susanne Wegener and the team at illuminart.
The projection runs through to 29 April, screening each evening during normal show times. If you are in the Flinders Ranges this week, it is worth the stop.
