🚨 COMMUNITY CONVERSATION- TALANOA | KŌRERO | TOK STORI | YARN 🚨

How do we keep our young people safe?
How do we recognise when they are struggling?
How do we strengthen the village around them as they navigate the pressures and influences facing youth today?

We invite parents, caregivers, mentors, youth workers, and community members to come together for an open and honest conversation/ talanoa focused on supporting and protecting our young people.

A night of listening, talking, learning, supporting one another, and strengthening our village ❤️

Our hearts, thoughts and prayers going out to our young people and families in our community who are navigating grief and going through hardships at this time🙏🏾😔

Pacific dancing brings out a joy within your soul that can be felt the moment you enter the room 🔥🥰

Last night our showgroup spent the evening learning Fiji Meke and Ori Tahiti. The smiles, giggles, and energy in the room… the videos don’t fully do it justice🌊

Huge thank you to our tutors Milika of , Stee, and Niu for sharing your knowledge, spirit, and culture with us ❤️

We never take these teachings for granted and carry the responsibility of protecting and honouring what we learn 🌺🔥

Nights like this leave us feeling incredibly grateful.

On behalf of our Co-Director Fred Schwenke, we would like to express our deep appreciation to and the World Fire Knife Championship organising committee for the honour of having Fred judge the Men’s Division at the World Fire Knife Championships in Laie, Hawaii last week🔥

For the past two years, Fred has had the privilege of judging some of the world’s best fire knife performers and continues to be inspired by the incredible passion, talent, and energy displayed each year.

Fred is also proud to have trained the 2025 Women’s World Champion , along with other top placing competitors over the years.

Congratulations to all competitors and winners of the 2026 World Fire Knife Championships 👏🏾🔥

We’re so grateful for the opportunity to spend time with the Dragons and share our Pacific culture together ❤️

We opened the space with a smoking ceremony, Siva Afi and Maori Kapa Haka as the players entered, creating an atmosphere of respect, connection and energy from the very beginning.

Our goal was to create a cultural experience the players could genuinely enjoy, while also learning through the knowledge shared by our tutors and presenters.

A huge thank you to Scott and Ben from the Dragons and all their team and management. Thank you also to Su’a Peter Suluape for travelling from overseas to speak and educate on the sacred art and history of tatau and to our Matavai tutors for teaching Tongan Faiva and Maori Kapa Haka and for sharing culture with so much pride and heart.

The day was built on love, encouragement and connection, while also creating space to learn more about the richness and strength of Pacific culture. Fa’afetai lava and malo ‘aupito to everyone who helped make the day so special.

Last night Matavai had the privilege of sharing our Pacific Island cultures on Dharug Country with 💙💛 We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land we stood on and honour First Nations peoples, the first storytellers of this place.

It was really special to share space and connect with the Parramatta Eels. So many within the club carry the heartbeat of Pasifika, grounded in love, respect, honour and humility. To our Pasifika players, thank you for representing our communities with such pride and purpose. You inspire our youth to stand proud in who they are and chase their dreams.

We hope our dances and songs lifted your spirits and we will keep you in our prayers and thoughts. All the best! Faafetai tele lava to the Eels for having us.

We’re working towards expanding our cultural arts programs into Redfern, and we’d love to hear from you.

If you live in the area, or would be interested in attending classes in Redfern, please comment below:

👉🏾What cultural arts classes would you like to see?

Redfern is a place of deep cultural significance and history for Aboriginal people and for Sydney. Spending time in the area, we felt such a strong and vibrant community especially among Aboriginal and Pacific Islander young people, and it’s something we’d be honoured to support and grow alongside.

✨ Our Lurnea Hub classes will continue as usual, this is about expanding, not replacing.

We can’t wait to connect, share, and build something meaningful together ❤️

Drop your ideas in the comments — we’d love your feedback!
