Sunset at McInherney Park on Saturday.

The park is named after James McInherney — the first Mayor of Port Macquarie, elected in 1887 when the town finally got its own Municipal Council.

The Hastings River is Doongang in Birpai — the name the river has carried for thousands of years before Oxley charted it in 1818.

I nearly didn't head out on Saturday morning.

It looked overcast, there wasn't much colour, and it felt like it was going to be a bit of a fizzer.

Then the sky changed.

These images were captured over about twenty minutes at Westport as the sunrise finally arrived.

Sometimes the least promising mornings turn out to be the best ones.

Saturday morning on the Hastings.

Before the colour reached the clouds, it was already moving across the river — catching the boats, the sandbanks and the first parts of town.

From calm mornings and soft colour to cloud, haze and shifting light, every sunrise tells a slightly different story.

These are a few moments from the past week, captured both from the ground and from the air.

Blue hour before sunrise at Settlement Point on Saturday. Watched the ferry make a few crossings while the light came up, a thin crescent moon still hanging overhead the whole time.

Long exposures turn the ferry into streaks of red, green and white — the actual boat disappears, just its lights tracing the crossing.

Same five minutes, different boat, every time. No timetable here — it goes when it goes, depending on the tide.

This one's a 30-second exposure at Settlement Point. The BBQ boat hire fleet sat dead still while the vehicle ferry slid past behind it, turning into three streaks of colour across the frame.

The ferry's been running here since 2007, built just down the road at the Birdon shipyard. No timetable — it just goes when it goes, depending on the tide. Five minutes across to the North Shore.
