We have been bringing Rock and Roll dance to Port Macquarie and surrounding districts since 1995. From the first time we saw another couple jiving on the dance floor we knew that was what we wanted to learn. We made a bee-line to this couple asking where we could learn to dance their style and to our delight they were willing to teach us. Together with a few other couples, we were keen to learn ho
w to rock and roll as well. In early 1995, the FJ Rock and Roll Dance Studio conducted a workshop, launching us on our rock and roll voyage and the yearning for learning. We began to teach what we had learnt to others and also became founding members of the original ‘Rock and Roll Dreams Dance Club’. When that club moved on to the Gold Coast with other members we began calling ourselves ‘Port Rockers’. After a few years of learning many people with a common interest looked for a locally based new club and teachers. And so the ‘Port Macquarie RSL Rock and Roll Dance Club’ evolved from where we began and we continued our teaching with lessons in Four Step and Six Step Rock and Roll, Rock and Roll Cha-cha, Slow Swing Jive, and Rock and Roll Partnered and Line dances. Soon the demand came from students to expand to teaching in Kempsey. So in July 2008 the Kempsey RSL Bowls Club became the venue for new dance lessons. A new name was necessary to cover all areas so ‘Let’s Dance Rock and Roll’ was born. Since then our teaching has moved to Thursday evening classes in Nambucca Heads. Over the years we have affiliated with members of several large Rock and Roll Clubs including ‘Gold Coast Rockers’, ‘South Coast Rockers’ and ‘Dance Time’ on the Gold Coast, and ‘Summerland Rockers’ in Lismore, and also teaching at the ‘Wintersun’ annual nostalgia festival held at Coolangatta over the long weekend in June of each year. We have continued our teaching with the just as successful ‘Cooly Rocks On’ festival. Locally, on Friday and Saturday nights, students of ‘Let’s Dance Rock and Roll’ make up many of the dancers dancing the night away and enjoying local bands at Clubs in the Port Macquarie, Kempsey Nambucca areas.
