Yes, it can be a bit smelly at times, and yes, it can get in the way of a beach walk. But the seagrass wrack you see washed up on our beaches is one of South Australia’s most important natural assets.

Estimated to be worth around $26,000 per hectare, per year, it is one of the most valuable ecosystems on the planet, and plays a critical role in keeping our coastline healthy.

Seagrass is a flowering plant that forms underwater meadows, providing food and shelter for marine life, improving water quality, producing oxygen and storing huge amounts of carbon.

When seagrass washes ashore, it continues to do important work. Wrack helps recycle nutrients, supports beach‑dwelling insects and birds, and acts as a natural buffer that protects our coastline from erosion and storm damage. Removing it removes these protections and can destabilise the beach system.

That’s why seagrass wrack is protected at a state level, and can’t be cleared away. Over time, most of it is naturally washed back into the ocean or breaks down and becomes part of the beach again, strengthening the coast for the next storm season.
