I was engineering a session at HOB (house of bamboo)recording studio with Neilso on Vocals and Blues Harp . I used the Presonus PD -70. Well !!!! For half the price of the Shure SM7 I got twice the value mic . I thought the noise floor was quieter and the tonal character was nicer. The SPL was equal to the SM7 but the PD seemed to pack more punch .,Goes to prove not all expensive mics are always the best . Shure SM7 👎 on this session . Anybody else have similar experiences?

Microphones .
Do you like the sound of ribbon microphones ?
Lately I’ve been using the SE Rupert Neve ribbon on vocals like the one Emil is using today . I find them to be more silky in the midrange apart from generally smooth all round. Thanks SE .

AUTO-TUNE ??? I'd like to get your feedback please.
Question 1
Is it cheating when singers use Auto-Tune?
Question 2
Do you expect a singer to be consistent both live and in the studio?

Below are some answers from a few .

1. "I don't think it's cheating, but it certainly isn't right! I think artists should embrace their voice and not try to change it!

2. "I think it is cheating because we want to hear the real sound that projects from their voices! TV programmes like X Factor have also stopped using it because they thought it was cheating.

3. "I do think that it is cheating. I believe that you should sing and record your natural voice."

4. "I think it's fine. People want the best of the best, so if that is required use it. There's no one saying you can't so you may as well put it to good use."
