There’s much to love about being a volunteer at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery, according to Jan.
“And I’m grateful to have the opportunity to be there,” she adds. “Meeting and greeting our visitors, sharing the gallery’s history in a community minded gallery with other volunteers who all feel the same way, is a joy.”
Jan is coming up to her 4th year as a volunteer and admits a special passion for the Banana Shed space where she currently coordinates exhibitions.

Trish Sheppard is an award-winning artist whose paintings express her passion for the Australian outback landscape as well as the sea and rain forest. She works in vibrant colours, with acrylics, watercolour, oils and charcoal. Her exhibition "Ocean to Bush" is showing in the Banana Shed until 18 June 2026.

Emerging artists invited to showcase talents

Emerging artists across the Noosa hinterland are being encouraged to enter this year’s Pomona Railway Station Gallery Emerging Artist Prize, with applications now officially open.

The competition aims to support and celebrate developing local creatives, offering thousands of dollars in prizes along with professional mentoring and exhibition opportunities.

Entries opened on 2 May and close on 27 June, with finalists to be showcased in a special exhibition from 29 August. Prize winners will be announced at the official opening on 5 September.

Artists living within a 50km radius of Pomona are eligible to apply, while Kabi Kabi artists living outside the region are also invited to enter. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists are strongly encouraged to participate.

The prize is open to emerging artists working in two-dimensional mediums, with artworks required to have been created within the past two years. Entrants may submit up to two works, each accompanied by high-quality photographs.

The overall winner will receive a $2,000 cash prize sponsored by Noosa Hinterland Real Estate, along with a CreateArt voucher, professional photography package from My photomotion’s Christine Hall, and a mentoring session with respected art curator Amber Creswell Bell.

An Encouragement Award includes $1,000 cash from Eumundi Rotary Club Initiative trading as Eumundi Voice, professional photography services from My photomotion, and a studio visit with Noosa Regional Gallery director Michael Brennan.

A People’s Choice Award is sponsored by Bendigo Bank Cooroy ($500 cash) and Tewantin Newsagency ($300 voucher).

Gallery organisers said the prizes provide an important platform for artists beginning their professional journey while strengthening the region’s vibrant arts community.

The entry fee is $25 per artwork, with all selected pieces required to be available for sale during the exhibition

This prize will provide talented emerging artists - living within a 50 km radius of Pomona - of any age with a further possible step towards showcasing their talents, having their art appreciated by a wider audience and appraised by experienced and successful leaders in our art world here on the coast.

The gallery is extremely grateful to local businesses for their generous sponsorship so that we are offering over $4000 in cash and other prizes to aid winners' artistic development.

There’s $3000 in cash prizes on offer, plus practical support packages including art supplies, mentoring sessions and professional photography.

We can't thank our volunteers enough for the time they provide to keep the Gallery a welcoming space for our visitors and artists. For over 25 years, the Pomona Gallery had been led and staffed by volunteers. They make this Gallery the special place that it is, from welcoming visitors, hanging exhibitions, being on the Committee and looking after the gardens. So thank you to our volunteers and to all the volunteers that provide for our community.

3D Artist of the Month - May | Cindy Mills

Cindy is a Bundjalung artist living and working on Kabi Kabi country for most of her life. She grew up on the Sunshine Coast and after moving around the state for work and family reasons, settled back into the Noosa region around 6 years ago.

Cindy mainly works with clay, making sculptural forms and functional objects but also does a lot of printmaking.

Her art is inspired by the ocean environment and the animals, birds and shells that live in and around it. Her sculptural forms are mostly unglazed as she prefers to work with the natural colours and textures of the clay. The sea urchin and sand dollar are recurring motifs in her work as is the dove and fish.

Volunteer of the Month: Jewel Polkinghorne
Jewel says she has found both purpose and inspiration through her volunteer work at the Pomona Railway Gallery, where she has been contributing her time for the past 12 months.

“The gallery is often described by visitors as a peaceful and welcoming space. So many people comment on the relaxed atmosphere—it really is a gem of the township,” Jewel says.

Jewel’s role includes small plant sales, tending to cuttings and repotting them into pre-loved and unique containers. With a lifelong connection to the arts—first as a student, then as an art teacher, and now in retirement—Jewel has recently returned to painting with renewed focus
