JOIN Mary-Louise Edwards at QG on Sun from 2pm for a QG Mingle.

Standing in the Smoky Haze
Each work begins with an underlying hand drawn framework of words associated with the description or experience of a natural environment — View, Dust, Echo, Rivers. The artist slowly overwrites individual letters, progressively obscuring their presence beneath layers of pigment and marks. Through this process, the drawing becomes a record of duration and reflection, registered through shifts in colour, texture and density.
I do not try to describe what I see. I work towards erasing whatever I start with, so each piece goes through a kind of filtering process towards the creation of a new material image.

Margaret Preston retrospective at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia.

Images & ref:
The mid-1920s marked the beginning of an extended period of printmaking that would come to define Margaret Preston’s oeuvre. These early prints combine Japanese ukiyo-e with designs appropriated from First Nations cultural material. They also mark Preston’s embrace of woodblock printing as the defining feature of Sydney modernism. Having studied the process overseas, Preston was considered a well-respected authority on the subject by Sydney’s artistic community. Artists such as Thea Proctor were introduced to the medium by Preston, who gave Proctor her first block to cut.

Margaret Preston aimed to create a singular style of Australian art. Yet by drawing on the continent’s unique flora and fauna while at the same time borrowing artistic principles from elsewhere, she produced the reverse: an art-historical narrative full of texture and contradiction. This paradox was most foregrounded in her work of the 1950s, when she began to depict Aboriginal figures directly, rather than simply First Nations cultural material.

The exhibition also includes 20 works by First Nations and contemporary artists who have responded to Preston’s oeuvre and contextualise her appropriation of Indigenous visual culture. These include world-premiere commissions by the late Bidjigal artist Marilyn Russell and Warumungu artist Jimmy Frank Jupurrurla; new acquisitions by senior Tiwi artists Raelene Kerinauia, Mary Elizabeth Moreen, and Kaye Brown; as well as work by Girramay, Yidinji and Kuku Yalanji artist Tony Albert, Wadawurrung artist Deanne Gilson, the late Ngarrindjeri artist Trevor Nickolls, and Gordon Bennett.
