In 1991, Mazda created one of its most unusual concepts—a fully functional vehicle that could fold entirely into a standard suitcase.

The project came from an internal engineering contest, where teams were encouraged to think beyond traditional car design. The result was a compact, portable machine powered by a small motor, capable of reaching speeds of around 30 km/h.

What made it stand out was its simplicity. The entire vehicle could be assembled in just a few minutes, turning a regular-looking suitcase into a rideable form of transport. It wasn’t built for highways, but for short, practical movement in tight spaces.

Although it never entered production, the Suitcase Car became a symbol of Mazda’s experimental mindset—showing how engineering can explore ideas far outside conventional limits.

It may not have changed transportation, but it proved one thing: creativity in car design doesn’t always follow the rules.
