Burlesque didn’t just burst onto stage dripping in rhinestones and boas.
Its roots go back to 19th-century London, where it started as cheeky satire — parodying classics, twisting gender roles, and poking fun at politics.

In 1868, Lydia Thompson and her “British Blondes” stormed New York. Imagine a troupe of bold women in tights, cracking jokes, singing, and flipping social norms on their head. It wasn’t st******se yet — it was parody, comedy, and scandal rolled into one.

American burlesque took that recipe and stirred in variety-style entertainment — minstrel influences, vaudeville acts, chorus numbers, b***y humour. It was about laughter and shock value, not polished glamour. The sensuality crept in later, with the “hoochie-coochie” dances of the 1890s and the st******se revolution of the 1920s.

But here’s the through-line: burlesque has always been rebellion. Women stepping onto stages where they weren’t meant to be. Audiences gasping. Society clutching its pearls. And performers reminding us that performance can be dangerous, funny, messy, and powerful all at once.

That same rebellious streak? Still alive every time we strut on stage today.

Since the 1800s, burlesque has been rebellion in rhinestones — a way to poke fun at society, parody what’s “proper,” and flip fantasies on their head. It was never just about st******se, it was about storytelling.

Some performers made audiences laugh, some made them gasp, some left them questioning what they thought they knew about women, desire, or art. The stage became a playground where banality got booted off and possibility took the spotlight.

And here’s the magic: it still is. ✨

Today, burlesque isn’t one thing. It’s parody, satire, fantasy, sensuality, chaos, comedy, heartbreak, joy. It’s shimmying your heart out one night and tearing down taboos the next. It’s yours to define.

Burlesque bridges the gap between who we are in daily life, and who we imagine we could be. It’s about owning our stories, our bodies, and presenting ourselves however the hell we want — on our terms.

When I look back at old photos, I’m grateful that I loved her — the woman who showed up, who danced with passion, and owned a stage.

When I look at photos now, I’m grateful that I love her too — the woman who did the work, listened to her body, still dances with passion and keeps showing up for herself.

My body looks different (my selfie face is still useless 🤣), but here’s the truth: some days I’m still working on the same sneaky thought patterns I’ve had since my teens. Self-love isn’t about getting it ‘right’ or finally becoming ‘enough.’ It’s about choosing, every single day, to treat yourself with kindness and self acceptance— no matter what shape you’re in.

Every version of me deserves love. And every version of you does too.

Bodies change. Confidence is the practice that stays.

The studio might be quiet, but my mind isn’t. My head’s been full of lists, half-finished plans, and little sparks of “oh, that could work.”
And I am not doing it alone!
There’s been a lot of reshuffling, brainstorming, and crossing out ideas that don’t serve the bigger picture.
It’s not glamorous, but it’s how we build something worth showing up for.
