We were almost not going to share a wrap of our incredible time at the Sydney Opera House.

Only because no words, nor images, felt like they were enough.

Then: Arts Tonight created this beautiful feature, and, in so many ways, it captures the feeling better than we ever could.

To everyone who joined us on this journey, especially all the dancers, creatives and crew: thank you. Social change through art takes so much giving, and you have all given so much ❤️

ALL THE WAY FROM TORONTO, MEET ASHMITA WHO JOINS US AT THE SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE FOR TEMPLE OF DESIRE. ✈️💫

Ashmita (she/her) is an educator and dancer whose love for intricacies in rhythm and emotion guide her movements. Under the tutelage of Guru Sujatha Suresh, Ashmita gained over a decade of dance experience, now complimented by her ongoing learning of Kathak under the guidance of Joanna De Souza. For Ashmita, embodying music and emotion through dance is when she feels most human. Ashmita performed in the Toronto season of Temple of Desire and now joins us once again, in Sydney!

MEET MAITRAYEE WHO JOINS US AT SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE FOR TEMPLE OF DESIRE 💫💫

Maitreyee is a versatile dancer whose artistry is deeply rooted in the classical tradition of Bharatnatyam. Trained at the Kalavardhini Charitable Trust in India under the guidance of Guru Mukta Soman, her foundation in the form is both rigorous and expansive, honouring its rich nuances while remaining open to the possibilities of contemporary expression.
Equally at home in the intricate subtleties of classical repertoire as she is in the freedom of experimental work, Maitreyee moves fluidly across the full spectrum of her craft. Her creative sensibility is further informed by a background in architecture, a discipline she continues to practice through her Sydney-based architectural lighting design studio. Her teaching extends beyond the stage. As a Zumba Fitness instructor, she brings the same warmth, precision and joy to a broader community of movers. Looking ahead, Maitreyee is focused on deepening her experimental practice, always drawing from tradition as her anchor and inspiration.

MEET ANJALI WHO JOINS TEMPLE OF DESIRE AT THE OPERA HOUSE 💫✨

Anjali navigates through tax matters during the day and adavus by evening. She is a storyteller with ankle bells - her pen and dance - the narrator, irrespective of its form. Her reclaimed journey is profoundly shaped by her gurus, Dr. Vyshnavie Sainath and Dr. Rajeswari Sainath, who continue to inspire her aspirations. Rooted in Bharatanatyam, she has trained across Kathak, Kathakali, and contemporary, flowing wherever the form takes her. An ardent believer in giving back, she creates a space to share the joy in dancing at NatyAnjali. Form being primary, she immerses in liberating movement where thoughts and beliefs flow, setting true expression into motion.

MEET MADHURAA WHO JOINS US IN TEMPLE OF DESIRE AT SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE!! ✨✨

Madhuraa is a proud Tamil Le***an and passionate storyteller. They studied Bharathanayam for 14 years on Dharug land under Guru Karthiga Ganesar. After a break Madhuraa revisited the art of dance through drag, currently performing around Sydney as Drag King ‘Manish Interest’. Madhuraa finds deep joy in the power that dance has given them to celebrate both Q***r and Tamil identity simultaneously.

MEET KAMSHI WHO JOINS TEMPLE OF DESIRE AT THE OPERA HOUSE!! 💫💫

Kamshi is a Bharatanatyam dancer inspired to experiment, collaborate and create fresh expressions of the form for wider audiences. Born in Botswana, raised in New Zealand, and now in Sydney, her passion never paused across borders. Training since age six, her Arangetram in 2012 under Guru Anuradha Ramkumar, marked the beginning of a deeper, exploratory journey. Since then, she has performed extensively, including with two NZ dance companies. Her experience at Artham Dance Company, under Dr. Bhuvana Kannan and Padma Akula, was pivotal to her development in contemporary Bharatanatyam, being part of award-winning work. She is happiest when tradition meets curiosity - sparking endless possibilities.

Anusha Badrinarayanan is a passionate Bharatanatyam dancer who has always found her voice through art. From childhood, she has explored emotions through dance, music, and painting. With deep respect for her gurus and gratitude for the timely opportunities that have guided her path, she continues to stay rooted in this classical art form. After becoming a mother, her connection to dance has evolved, bringing greater depth, authenticity, and purpose to her expressions.

MEET PRITHI WHO JOINS THE CAST OF TEMPLE OF DESIRE AT THE SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE 🪷

Prithi is a Bharatanatyam dancer who finds joy in classical movement, storytelling, and the playfulness of dance. She has trained under Gayatri Krishnamurthy since a young age, building a strong foundation in the form. Living in Dubbo in recent years, her practice has been more intermittent, making this her first return to performance since relocating. She is excited to reconnect with the stage and to witness how the next generation of Bharatanatyam dancers and South Asian artists continue to reimagine tradition.
