My Memories of Shems Friedlander

Directed by Kitty Amina Aksoy
Germany

The short film memoir honors Shems Ira Friedlander (1940–2022), a key figure in promoting Sufi tradition in the West and the author of several books on Islamic spirituality. The narrative follows a German woman who embraced Islam while living in Saudi Arabia, influenced by works like “The Tao of Islam.” After relocating to Istanbul, she became Friedlander’s neighbor and later reflected on her spiritual blindness at his funeral, realizing the significance of his teachings.

The film, prepared for the Konya Sufi Film Festival in May 2025, explores themes of adapted spiritual names and their connection to destiny. It references Prof. Sachiko Murata's insights on Ibn Arabi’s teachings about love and the mission of Hazrat Inayat Khan to unite East and West through music. The film also highlights the journeys of Friedlander and his companions, Ovidio Salazar and others, to significant spiritual sites. It concludes with Salazar singing a birthday song for Friedlander, two years before his passing.

7:60

Directed by Florian Abu Malik Vermeulen
Netherlands

In 2002, Mohamedou Ould Slahi was taken to Guantánamo Bay. He was held for fourteen years. He was never charged with a crime. 7:60 — its title drawn from the Qur’anic verse in which a prophet is accused of plain error — sits with Slahi in the years after his release. Across four movements — The Arrest, The Confession, The Release, In Plain Error — the film traces not the machinery of his detention, but the interior architecture that survived it: faith, patience, and a refusal to answer cruelty in kind. A portrait of what captivity could not reach.

Between Sky and Sea

Directed by
Ismail Abu Hatab

A short docu-film by photojournalist Ismail Abu Hatab, covering life in displacement during the genocide in Gaza in 2024. The film is largely wordless. With the exception of a few interviews with older individuals, Between Sky and Sea is an artful compilation of daily life in displacement. Most of the footage comes from Deir Al-Balah in Summer 2024 (at the time, the largest displacement camp in Gaza). It concludes with footage of the mass march back to northern Gaza later in that same year.

This film was made as part of an immersive exhibition, "Between Sky and Sea," which featured Abu Hatab's photography, a recreation of a Gazan tent, and audio design of sounds in Gaza. Between Sky and Sea has been in Los Angeles, Chicago, London, and Greece.

Ismail Abu Hatab was martyred in the bombing of Al-Baqa Cafe on June 30, 2025. His photography received a prize at the 2025 CCFD Terre-Solidaire awards in Paris. His work continues to be shown through his organization, ByPa ("By Palestine").
