Creative Challenge: St Joseph’s Primary School
18 – 22 November

Last month artists Annick Akanni and Sete Tele travelled onto the lands of the Miriwoong Gajerrong People to St Joseph’s Primary School in Kununurra. The students worked with the artists to explore visual art, textile design and storytelling.

The students were welcomed into the workshop space and experimented with storytelling techniques, poetry and sharing narratives with their peers. They further explored numerous team activities such as movement and large visual art drawings which strengthened their teamwork. Building on the techniques they experimented with, the participants worked with textile pieces and used their creativity to find ways to design and place them together to form a final piece. Other students were drawn to digital art and experimented with editing and portraiture.

On the final day of residency the students transformed the library into a pop-up gallery for the school students and school staff to walk through and celebrate the young artists’ hard work! A generous platter of fresh fruit, vegetables and healthy snacks were laid out for all to enjoy whilst exploring the gallery space.

Creative Challenge: Norseman District High School
18 – 22 November

In Term 4 this year artists Melanie Maclou and Stu McMillan travelled onto the lands of the Ngadju People to Norseman District High School. They worked with the year 3-4 and high school students to explore screen printing, visual art techniques and environmental art.

During the residency both groups of students experimented numerous art mediums such as screen printing with found objects from nature, drawing and cyanotype printing. The students reflected on the theme of ‘heart’ and their own abstract expression of the theme and what brings their heart joy. This engaged the young artists creativity and they worked with materials and processes which sparked happiness and joy in their art.

The participants were prompted to consider design and composition of their pieces and how to arrange their materials to achieve the desired result. Inspired by their composition skills the students worked collaboratively to create a large-scale compilation of their individual pieces.

At the conclusion of the residency a printmaking exhibition was held at the school assembly. All students, school staff and community members attended to celebrate the young artists works! The large collaborative piece was installed in the school for all students and staff to enjoy in the future.

Creative Challenge: Purnululu Aboriginal Independent Community School
28 October – 1 November

Artists Rachel Arianne Ogle and Fred Leone travelled to Purnululu Aboriginal Independent Community School, onto the lands of the Gija People, to work with the students across movement, music and storytelling.

The students were welcomed into the workshop space with movement and music activities to explore their self expression. The young artists were then inspired to work towards their own contemporary dance piece, accompanied by an original rap song. The participants were inspired by a local Gija story, the Eagle and the Crow, and incorporated storytelling into the lyrics of their song. The students worked with beat making, recording, sound editing, choreographing, and set design to bring together their exciting original piece.

At the culmination of the residency, the students performed their original song alongside their recording at a school assembly. The school cohort, school staff and community members came to celebrate the young artists creation. To close the celebration everyone was welcomed to share a platter of fresh fruit and vegetables and reflect on the amazing work of the students over the week.

Creative Challenge: Wiluna Remote Community School
21 – 25 October

Artists Rae Cottam and Luke Joseph Ryan travelled to Wiluna Remote Community School, onto the lands of the Martu People, to explore visual art, collaboration and large scale mosaic work.

The AWESOME artists and the participants started with some exciting discussions about the theme of heart and how this could be represented in their own unique art. Inspired by the theme, the students brainstormed and shared with their peers what made their hearts happy. Each young artist transformed their ideas into visual symbols and paintings on their own square tile. Each tile created by the students were pieced together to form a large mosaic with the Aboriginal flag at the centre, encapsulating their distinct self-expression and connection to each other, their culture and community.

To celebrate the young artists hard work and creativity the final mosaic was displayed outside on the final day of residency. Students, school staff and community members came to view and celebrate the works, the young artists proudly showing off their individual pieces! A generous spread of fresh fruit, vegetables and healthy snacks were available for all to enjoy as they celebrated the residency conclusion.

Creative Challenge: College Row School
26 - 30 August

Artists Kylie Bywaters and Tao Issaro travelled onto the lands of the Wardandi Noongar People to College Row School to explore multisensory art forms and self-expression with the participants.

The children were welcomed into a colourful and engaging workshop space and explored multiple different sensory art forms including craft works, kinesthetics, music and movement. Each day an array of different sensory activities were organised by the artists and the students were able to move through the space and discover what most connected with them and sparked their creativity.

The adaptive activities allowed the participants to focus on their unique connection with different artforms and discovered ways to express their personality, skills and talents. Each session had collaborative elements where the young artists could work with their peers and shine in a team activity.

The residency culminated in a vibrant dance party! This reflected the students love for music and movement. A picture slideshow of the week’s works were showcased and school staff could celebrate the achievements of the young artists and the special memories created.

This residency was proudly supported by .wa and the Go for 2&5 message.
