Paul Crispin Rigby AM was an Australian cartoonist who worked for newspapers in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. At the Daily News in Perth, Rigby won five Walkley awards in the 1960s before drawing for Murdoch papers in Sydney, London and New York. He estimated he drew 15,000 cartoons.

From the age of eleven when Elizabeth Blair Barber first enrolled in Henri Van Raalte’s Perth School of Art in 1921, she became part of the City’s artistic milieu, both absorbing what was around her and contributing to the cultural ecology that for the most part, formed who she was as an artist.

Her importance lies in her endless recording of the world around her, in particular her personal engagement with the forests of the southwest of the state and her portraits of her peers in the Perth of the nineteen sixties and ‘seventies when her management of the Cremorne Studios played such an important role as a home for young aspiring artists.

To Western Australia’s creatives, from studio to stage, Blair Barber was the gifted and prolific painter who chronicled WA history, persuaded celebrated figures of the day to sit for portraits, and played a pivotal role in nurturing young artists.

Whether it was oil on canvas, delicate watercolours or pencil sketches in lieu of a camera, she was an avid storyteller who fearlessly challenged societal norms to forge a new appreciation of female artists in society.
