Little ‘190’ was a tiny bit too young to be out on their own 🖤

This week’s cockatoo patient of the week arrived at our Vet Hospital after being found on the ground and unable to fly.

During a full health check our vets found no injuries or abnormalities, making it clear that this poor kid had simply become separated from its parents.

Juvenile Red-Tailed Black Cockatoos stay with their parents for up to two years after leaving the nest, learning essential skills for the wild and receiving extra feeds along the way. At only just past fledging age, little ‘190’ is still far too young to be independent.

After some much-needed fluids ‘190’ was transitioned onto a specialised formula designed to make young birds healthy and strong alongside plenty of TLC from the vet team.

This bird has done so well they have now moved onto the next stage of rehabilitation with our amazing rehabilitation partners Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre where they'll be nurtured and encouraged towards self-feeding and integration into a flock destined for release.

Yesterday, a Perth Zoo veterinarian and veterinary nurse were called to the field to provide expertise for a stranded humpback whale in Port Kennedy.

Whale strandings are difficult events and are not always within our control. Sadly, this whale passed away overnight.

While it's always hoped there's a positive outcome, our responsibility is to ensure the animal does not experience any unnecessary suffering. Our team worked closely with our friends at Parks and Wildlife Service, Western Australia to provide the whale with comfort and palliative care.

Our team continue to assist today by collecting biological samples to help future research and help us better understand the case.

Thank you to everyone, especially our dedicated staff, who helped provide care for this whale when it needed it the most 💙

There’s a new girl group in town 💅

Five female Ring-tailed Lemurs have leaped into the African Savannah, and they’re already making themselves at home.

The curious four-year-olds have been spotted soaking up the sun and climbing high into the habitat as they explore their new surroundings.

This International Orangutan Day, we're celebrating the incredible orangutans who call Perth Zoo home. As ambassadors for their wild cousins, they help raise awareness of the challenges orangutans face, including habitat loss and the illegal wildlife trade.

Since 2006, Perth Zoo has partnered with Frankfurt Zoological Society to support orangutan conservation through Jungle School, release programs, wildlife patrols, and community education initiatives.
