It’s time to start putting some wonderful faces to the names adorning our Perth Moves Workshop Series lineup. First up is Fábio ‘Krayze’ Januário who will be teaching ‘Afrokuduro’ in Week 1.

Afrokuduro is a dance style from Angola mixing Kuduro and Afrohouse with sprinklings of other styles such as Pantsula (South Africa), Kwaito (South Africa), Azonto (Ghana) and Coupé Décalè (Ivory Coast).

Krayze is a seasoned dancer, performer and musician (you can hear him playing rn!) and is here with Marco da Silva Ferreira to dance in CARCAÇA for Perth Festival. We’re super excited to learn from him whilst he’s here… and you should be too! 👀

In an Australian first, STRUT Dance brings world-acclaimed choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui to Perth for Perth Moves as part of Perth Festival 2025.

Perth Moves is an energetic festival of dance like no other, presented as part of Perth Festival from the 10 – 28 February. Perth Moves is threefold: a major collaboration with choreography superstar Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, featuring free performances of the world premiere of Manifest; a free social dance hub on a large open-air stage in Forrest Place; and an international dance workshop series.

As we move into the festive season, why not consider making a gift that will allow others to experience the extraordinary and uplifting power of dance?

Announcing the recipients of the BlakDance × STRUT Fellowships for Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s Manifest at Perth Festival

Early career artist: David Kila Biondi-Odo (Mamu / Kalkadoon / Mer Island)
Established artist: Olivia Adams (Wulli Wulli)

The Early Career Fellowship supported David to attend STRUT’s Sidi Larbi Cherkoaui two-week workshop in November. Now, both Fellows, David and Olivia, will join the cast of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s Manifest, performing in Perth Festival in February 2025.

STRUT is so excited to welcome David and Olivia back to Boorloo, David having recently been here for the workshop and Olivia dancing in Perth Moves 2024 for Michele Rizzo’s Coalescing Towards. See ya soon!

We’d also like to celebrate Beau Dean Riley Smith (Wiradjuri / Gamillaraay) and Tamara Eve Bouman (Birrpai), who were both successful in auditioning for Manifest.

And finally, we’re super happy to announce two Perth Moves Bursary recipients with the GUTS Dance Bursary being awarded to Chandler ‘Cheeky’ Connell (Wiradjuri / Ngunnawal) and the STRUT Dance First Nations Bursary awarded to Bridgette Davies (Ngarrindjeri).

Practice Sharing with Laura Boynes.

Spend a few hours in the creative process of SUBTEXT, a new work in development by Laura Boynes and a mixed abilities cast.

Practice Sharing is a workshop to enter into artistic dialogue, share skills, provide a space for physical thinking and engage in different creative practices.

SUBTEXT has been developed during Laura’s time as the STRUT + Co3 Fellowship recipient for 2024.

Two major choreographic opportunities from STRUT are currently open and accepting EOIs.

Restore, in partnership with PICA, presents a performance commission and presentation opportunity for WA artists and a performance remount opportunity for Asia-Pacific artists.

Seed presents a $10,000 grant awarded to a STRUT member to develop new work in Western Australia.

Learn lighting design with Chloe Ogilvie 💡

About the workshop:
In this workshop, participants will learn technical jargon and the lighting design process, giving practitioners a better understanding in which to form a collaborative dialogue between creatives.

This icon is touching down in Boorloo for his show ‘Homo Pentecostus’ (at PICA, 23-26 October) and we’ve been lucky enough to line up a Practice Sharing whilst he’s here.

About the workshop:
Through a combination of set material and improvisation, Joel’s workshop invites participants to discover how to replace muscular effort with precision of direction and activation of the imagination.

Space Grant is an annual opportunity for two STRUT members to be granted 80 hours of studio time to use however they please with no outcome necessary.

Pipedreams opens tonight.

In March, STRUT teamed up with The Blue Room to offer an early-career artist the chance to present their work as part of The Blue Room’s 2024 Annual Season.

Six-ish months later we have Pipedream by Brent Rollins. A tale of survival told through contemporary dance, Pipedream explores the ups and downs of life on the land. Inspired by real stories from rural Australia, the result is a powerful duo dripping with resilience and heart.
