The Glass Flower Bar The Glass Flower Bar creates handcrafted glass flowers, jewellery and remembrance pieces from my studio in Western Australia.

Every piece is individually lampworked using traditional techniques and designed to last a lifetime.

The Baby Blooms have been incredibly popular at Mundaring Hills Open Studios.

I’d made them as the smaller members of the flower family. The sort you could tuck onto a bookshelf, sit beside the kitchen sink or give a spot on the table without rearranging your entire house.

Then they started heading out the door.

So I’m back at the torch before the final Open Studios weekend ends. Each Baby Bloom starts as glass and wire in the flame, then goes into the kiln before it can come home with you. I work by eye and instinct, which means they all come out a little different. I’ve never seen the appeal of making everything behave exactly the same way.

If you’re visiting Mundaring Hills Open Studios this final weekend, come and choose the Baby Bloom that makes you think, bloody hell, I love that.

Opening weekend at Mundaring Hills Open Studios brought so many people through the door, and I’m still thinking about the way people chose.

Some came in for a look, then stayed to inspect the flowers properly. They picked up stems. They stood in front of the arrangements, weighing up which colour belonged in their home.

A few people chose a flower straight away. Others walked around, came back, then decided they could not possibly leave that particular one behind.

I understand both methods.

Every piece that went home meant I was back at the bench sooner than expected, making orders and building more flowers for the rest of Open Studios. Glass, wire, a bloody hot flame, and a bench full of stems in various stages of becoming something.

That’s a rather lovely job to have.

A vase is a perfectly sensible place for flowers.

For the Teatime Collection, I wanted the flowers to arrive with a bit more baggage.

So I gathered teapots, sugar bowls and milk jugs, then paired each one with its own handmade glass flowers. The vessel had to earn its place. Some were quietly lovely. Some looked like they’d been waiting years to cause a small scene on somebody’s shelf.

Each flower is made by hand with glass, wire and a bloody hot flame, then arranged into the vessel it belongs with. There will only ever be one version of each combination.

I like homes that hold things you’ve chosen because you loved them, not because they matched the cushions. A glass flower arrangement in a milk jug beside your books does a much better job of telling that story than another carefully coordinated object.

The Teatime Collection launches Mundaring Hills Open Studios on 17 October. Come and choose the teapot, sugar bowl or milk jug you’d happily give shelf space to.

I started making jewellery because I couldn’t find the materials for the ideas in my own head.

At the time, I kept seeing the same supplies and the same shapes in makers’ magazines. I wanted to make the things I could picture, so I taught myself to melt glass.

The first pieces were beads, then small glass pins on wire, turned into botanical jewellery. Then the pins got bigger. They became stems, plant stakes, and eventually the glass flower arrangements I make now.

That history is why a neat answer about timing is almost impossible.

A flower might begin with no plan at all. A colour I can’t leave alone, a shape from a garden, or a piece of glass that has been sitting on my bench demanding attention. Then I build it petal by petal, and occasionally brush the burning bits of glass away that have shocked while melting.

Nearly 17 years in, I still like that no two flowers turn out exactly the same. Even if I try, there will always be slight differences.
