So now that I’ve chosen the images I want to work from, the next step is getting them onto my paper. Sure, I could draw everything freehand, but that would take a lot of time — and for smaller works, it’s just not necessary. I use a lightbox with graphite paper instead.

I place the graphite paper under my reference image, switch on the lightbox, and trace the key features I want to transfer. I check the drawing as I go to make sure the lines are coming through cleanly. It’s a simple process, but it gives me an accurate foundation to build on. I’ll show how I transfer bigger works (the ones that don’t fit on the lightbox) soon. Let me know if you have any questions.

Side‑by‑side feather progress today — original on the left, second attempt on the right. At first glance I actually think the left looks better, mostly because that right‑hand feather has more colour in the first version. I changed the feathers slightly in the second run, so they’re not exact duplicates of the first version.

But in reality, the right‑side version is far better executed. The first was done on lower‑quality paper — lighter gsm, a bit creamy, and honestly not the best choice.

The second version is now going through a stretching process… but that’s for another day.
