🌿 ALBANY 2026 – RECORDED SHORT STORIES - Take a Listen 🎧

From Whaler’s Cove to Torbay, Lower King Boat Ramp to Bluff Knoll — discover Albany through the words, memories and imaginations of local writers.

As part of the creative development of OUR PLACE: RAIN OR SHINE, THEATRE 180 invited Albany writers to share their stories of this extraordinary place — its people, its history, its landscapes and the experiences that make Albany home.

💛 A heartfelt celebration of Albany’s identity — past, present and imagined.

These beautiful recorded short stories span the full spectrum of human experience. Some are poignant. Some joyous. Some heartbreaking. All are deeply affecting.

We’ve chosen some iconic Albany locations where you can sit, put on your headphones, and listen to these stories while taking in the landscape that inspired them.

A centre point to our foyer exhibition that will run from Sept 1 - 26 at Albany Entertainment Centre is the THEATRE 180 legacy quilt. Featuring individual panels crafted by local Albany quilters Beth Edwards, Chris Adams, Denise Chandler, Dorothy Moore, Elaine Sunter-Smith, Fran Burvill, Isobel Wilson, Kate Thomas, Kerrie Wakefield, Marian Little, Maxine Gunther, Nan Hewitt, Penny Roberts, Val Burge and Wendy Alssema, with final arranging and quilting done by Elvie Haluszkiewicz, this is a stunning piece which is a lasting expression of people's connection to Albany.

This beautiful quilt will be gifted to the The City of Albany following the exhibition.

Our wonderful exhibition curator Tash Rolfe and Visual Designer Josephine Jay Gneiss Design have created such a moving experience to complement the stage production Our Place, Rain or Shine.

“They’re closing the whaling station very soon, so 1978 will be the last year of whaling in Australia – they say we might then see whale calves back in the sound.”

For years whaling was an important industry for Albany, now sustainable tourism sees thousands flock to the Great Southern to marvel at its natural beauty, and the migratory passage of a multitude of whales.

"Four years I have been waiting in Italy for Nico to save the money. Now we are married, I can come Australia! I get my ticket, I pack my suitcase, and Nico will meet me in Fremantle and bring me to his home in Albany.”

Francesca and Nico’s story embodies the experience of many post-war Italian migrants, looking for opportunity and a new life in a new country, whose hard work and rich culture has fed into the continuing story of Albany.

WHAT AN ANNIVERSARY!

150 years ago today CATALPA arrived in New York, having sailed to the other side of the world in a daring rescue mission to free six Irish Fenians held at Fremantle Prison, political prisoners fighting against the tyranny of British rule.

An amazing story of courage, resilience, hope and the belief in fighting for what is right, captured in THEATRE 180’s production CATALPA: Flight to Freedom.

Tickets are now on sale for the next performance of this acclaimed play at Saltwater Busselton Wednesday 11th November, 7:30pm.
