OUR SPIRITUAL SERPENT + ARTWORK SPOTLIGHT

Artwork by Kenny Diamond.

Our spiritual serpent lay resting in the Fortescue River with its secret bird. It prefers no noise when entering the Fortescue River because it will get very angry and send lightening and rain and strong wind to send you on your way home from there.

YINDJIBARNDI BAWA > ARTWORK SPOTLIGHT

Artwork by Mary Watson.

Located in the far northwest of Western Australia, our traditional lands encompass a vast tract of the central and western Pilbara including Nhanggangunha (Millstream); Yurlburr (Python Pool); Gambulanha (Hamersley Ranges) and Yarnda Nyirra (the Fortescue River). Our waterways and springs, and the ceremonies of our Yulara (rainmakers) give life to every living creature on our tableland homelands. Across our country, permanent water holes (Yinda) have long provided life enriching sustenance to Ngaardangarli (Aboriginal people), as camping places of shade and coolness, rich in plant, animal, bird, fish and reptile life.

ROEBOURNE TOWN MID 80s > ARTWORK SPOTLIGHT

This is a painting of Roebourne from my memory of it when I was young. We used to always be down at the river. It used to be flowing all the time, a much bigger river back in the old days. We would fish, swim and wash our clothes down at the river.

Lot of young people don’t really know about that river life. The river used to be right up alongside that road. I’m lucky I can paint it on my canvas and tell the young ones about the old time.

RUGGED COUNTRY > ARTWORK SPOTLIGHT

During dry summer months our Country looks so dry, but the beauty of the red earth, the spinifex and dry grass make it beautiful.

Although it doesn’t rain, but during the cool weather, the wetness in the morning, the heavy dew waters it all down and the new growth comes.

Artwork by Allery Sandy.
