Thank you to Poetry Judge, for your kind comments about my poem 'Paperbark' written about my Mother's declining health with dementia. It was awarded Highly Commended at WA Poets Perth Poetry Festival 2024.

Paperbark by Melissa Domiati (Creatrix 63)

Full of beautiful imagery that just drew me in and immersed me, but held me gently as the topic of grief, of aging and beyond, is gently delivered in a profound, relatable, and thoughtful way. A topic not often discussed, especially in such a calm fashion where those on both sides of the experience are sad, yet calm, accepting, understanding. But most of all, supportive to each other and to those who read this poem. Melissa, thank you too for taking the time and holding the space for yourself and for others, and for writing and sharing your words.

Thank you so much little poetry book, your words, never written for publication, now sold more than 1000 copies.

You have made a life of your own - continually receiving messages of how your words provide joy and solace for people, have been read at funerals, weddings, published in journals, heard on podcasts, projected on city screens, shortlisted for prizes … from as far away as India, Japan, US & the UK.

Little Book, you opened the door for me to read at The Bowery Poetry Club in New York, to read your words at International Women's Day celebrations, libraries, schools, bookstores, wellness events, balls, women's circles, to be invited to write a powerful poem for a protest rally, inspire others to write at my cultivating calm writing workshops, perform at Perth Poetry festival alongside people of incredible talent & passion for poetry …. all in a whirlwind of 6 months.

I shared you as a Valentine's Day gift dedicated to my love, that grew from seeds planted at City Farm Writer’s group, you have introduced me to new friends who love poetry as much as I do at WA Poets, Writing WA, Perth Poetry Club & established the cultivating calm - perth writer's circle to help others in their writing journeys.

17 years without you big brother. I wrote this for you..❤️📚
Brad's bookcase 
I search solemn shelves 
hollow, sorrow pulls deep

I ruminated in rows 
reserved for memories of your pain 

I felt I needed to keep
tortuous truths catalogued 
in the library of my heart 
stories of sorrow 
now need to be returned
as I touch tasselled bookmarks
placed in perfumed pages
I shall soley seek sunshine 
in your volumes of valour 
recorded to remember 
too important to forget. 

The hardest page to turn
is the knowing 
you won't be in the next chapter 
yet my story must continue 
without you. 

(I promise you it will be an adventure story worth reading).
