MEET THE ARTIST: KRISTIAN BORRING
Originally from Denmark, guitarist Kristian Borring has cemented his name as a melodic contemporary jazz artist, who can be a leader and sideman alike. He has appeared and/or recorded with cutting edge jazz players such as saxophonists Tommaso Starace and Will Vinson, vibraphone player Jim Hart, as well as lyrical vocalists such as Polish folk diva Monika Lidke, and Australian jazz singer Chris McNulty.

🎼 As a creative force, Kristian is often described as an understated virtuoso with a deeply melodic approach. Kristian is now residing in Perth, Western Australia where his creative contribution includes his new Australian trio Number J***y, an experimental guitar-led jazz trio as well as the Sydney based band Turning Pages – with Drummer Paul Derricott.

🎸 Kristian returns to Europe to work and tour with his European quartet which has received acclaim over the years. He has performed with his own ensembles and as a sideman for other all over Europe and Australia. He has also worked as ‘session’ and ‘side-man’ over the past nearly two decades with a great variety of groups and performers in Australia and Europe.

When not performing, Kristian does session work, as well as lecturing in jazz guitar, composition, ensemble skills and arranging at the Western Australian Academy of the Performing Arts.

MEET THE ARTIST: GÁBOR CSORDÁS
Gábor is a versatile pianist who draws inspiration from different styles and projects. His piano style is influenced by the European tradition but also draws inspiration from gospel, neo-soul and even electronic music and disco.

🎹 His breakthrough came in 2019 when he released his first jazz trio album "Swansong" with Japanese bassist Noriaki Hosoya and American drummer Marty Risemburg. The album was a success in Japan resulting in a tour in four main cities; Tokyo, Kyoto, Nagoya and Shizuoka.

He won the Best Composers Prize at the Bujitor Film Festival in 2019 for his soundtrack of the documentary "Egodetox".

MEET THE ARTIST: BEN VANDERWAL

🥁 Ben Vanderwal is one of the most in demand jazz drummers in Australia. From an early age he encountered the legendary drummer/teacher Frank Gibson Jnr who helped unravel the mysteries of that strange, fascinating music.

Originally from Perth, Ben has spent time in New York and Melbourne, performing around the world including tours of the UK, France, Ireland, India, USA, China, Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Japan, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, China and Thailand.

He has played with John Scofield, Charlie Haden, Howard Levey, Madeleine Peyroux, James Morrison, Chris Potter, George Garzone, Kate Ceberano, Mark Murphy, Ernie Watts, Lionel Rose, David Campbell, Rhonda Birchmore, Nigel Kennedy, Don Burrows, Deborah Byrne, Normie Rowe and Tim Minchin.

🎵 Ben has performed on over 30 recordings with a wide variety of artists. Recently he has returned to New York to study privately with some of the top Afro Cuban artists. Currently, Ben is busy playing shows around Perth and the East Coast.

MEET THE ARTISTS: IMOGEN THOMSON & AUSTIN SALISBURY
🥁 Imogen and Alex formed this group in 2018; combining the improvisation and harmonic intricacies of Jazz with the primal groove and percussive sounds of Afro-Cuban music.

🎹 Leading the band is Imogen on percussion and Austin on piano. Inspired by the likes of Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Lionel Loueke and Pedrito Martinez, they have enlisted the help of Alex Reid (drums), Jeremy Thomson (guitar) and Alistair Peel (double bass).

The group released their debut album “Mejadra” in November of 2018 and at the Perth International Jazz Festival.

MEET THE ARTIST: ALEXANDER BOULTON
Alexander Boulton is professional jazz guitarist, banjo player and composer based in Wellington, New Zealand. A graduate from Te Köki NZ School of Music, he specialises in swing, bebop, clawhammer banjo and early jazz styles.

Alex has been teaching and playing in London and Wellington for the past few years and performs regularly with a number of groups ranging from a guitar trio to a 12 piece ensemble. He has released two albums under his own name - "Portrait" and "Les Charmants".

MEET THE ARTIST: GEMMA FARRELL
Gemma Farrell is a Perth-based jazz saxophonist, composer and educator.

🎷She is a PhD candidate and lecturer in jazz studies. Gemma has led a Young Women in Jazz program since 2014 and in 2022 she started the Womxn in Jazz ensemble, dedicated to performing the music of people of marginalised genders.

⭐️ Gemma was one of three finalists for the Humanitarian category of the 2022 Australian Women in Music Awards.

She has released 8 albums as a leader including The Gemma Farrell Quintet, her main project. They released their second album, “The View From The Top,” in May 2022.

Gemma is the founder and musical director of the Artemis Orchestra, a predominately female big band that performs original music by Australian women, non-binary and transgender people. Their debut album “Elephant in the Room” was released in June 2021.

MEET THE ARTIST: ATTILA JUHÁSZ "JACK"
Attila Juhasz Jack started his musical career at age of 8 in Budapest and completed his diploma at Liszt Ferenc Music Academy Jazz Department in 1995.

🏫 He went to Western Washington University (USA) where he took his Master Of Music Diploma in Performing Arts and took lessons from Chuck Israels.

After this period he played in different jazz and pop groups in Hungary and on different TV Shows including Megasztár, Voice, and Fábry Show.

Jack is currently a member of the Budapest Jazz Orchestra and various Hungarian jazz and pop combos. He has played on a multiple recordings, and has three albums under his name: "What If I Could", "Serendipity" and "Out Of Frame".

MEET THE ARTIST - SIYA CHARLES
🎶 Siya Charles is a tenor/ bass trombonist, composer and arranger based in Cape Town, South Africa.

She has worked with the likes of Hugh Masekela, Jimmy Dludlu, American/Costa Rican trombonist Luis Bonilla, American trombonist Steve Turre, award-winning saxophonist Chad LB, Lira, Simphiwe Dana, Freshly Ground, Amanda Tiffin, Melanie Scholtz, Marcus Wyatt, Andile Yenana and Feya Faku.

🌎Siya has performed in jazz festivals all around the world. And after many years as a reliable "sideman", she has established a new musical collective. The Siya Charles Sextet features some of Cape Town's finest jazz musicians.

🎶 A jazz combo is a great example democracy at work; with each player having the freedom to play what they want but with the desire to make the whole group sound good.

Jazz musicians realize the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, supporting each other whilst retaining their own artistic individuality.

MEET THE ARTIST: DANIEL HAYLES
Daniel Hayles is a piano and keyboard player based in Wellington, New Zealand. He performs in a variety of styles and settings, writing and arranging music for local and international artists.

🎹 Daniel was classically trained and has a post-grad diploma in jazz piano from the New Zealand School of Music. 🛳 He spent time playing piano in cruise ships and is now a busy working musician amongst the wealth of talent in Wellington.

His regular live engagements range from stomping New Orleans rhythm & blues with Gold Nugget Pawn Shop, raging party times with Richter City Rebels, ripping organ hits with JB3, the occasional piano chair with Orchestra Wellington, to international tours with the likes of Lord Echo, Louis Baker and Hollie Smith.
