THE VAPORISATION OF THE VASTNESS is the next installment in a suite of multi-sensory, full-bodied atmospheric ‘weather events’ that artist Luke Jaaniste (Mesmerism Studio) has been creating around Australia, both outdoors and inside. His work is highly experiential. It can feel like you are inside a cinematic event, a dreamscape, a ceremonial memory, or the birth of some part of the universe.
This new work has been developed by the artist working on site, across several weeks and into the wee hours of the night, in the lead up to Strange. The resulting ethereal forms of THE VASTNESS — which uses fog, light, architectural sculpture and spatialised sound — have emerged from the geometries, acoustics, surface textures and micro-climate of this abandoned old cinema space.
The artist will also perform live spatialised music, in a series of activations within the installation that push and pull the ongoing music-scape into heightened ecstasy and intricacy

Synapse is an approximately 20m long, walk-through, educational, interactive anatomy art installation composed of an eyeball attached to an optic nerve tunnel that leads into a giant inflatable brain. It features lighting, video projection effects and augmented reality projections to communicate to the audience how their own sight works and is designed to inspire people to learn about and see the beauty in their own bodies’ anatomy. It is intended to empower people to realise that they are capable of learning subjects like anatomy that are often perceived as difficult (but are often just poorly taught). Synapse includes Aboriginal language where installed to describe the anatomy and physiology of the visual system in the ‘mother tongue of the land’ to show respect and recognition for culture. Boorloo (Perth) is the land of the Whadjuk people. The language descriptions for Whadjuk Boodjar was provided by Whadjuk and Ballardong Nyungar Elder Auntie Marie Taylor with cultural engagement support by Dr Barbara Hostalek, an Aboriginal (Yawuru and Gija cultural connections) artist (playwright, poet) and veterinarian

ART - Soul Carrier

Soul Carrier is inspired by my discovery of a dead Pied Cormorant at my local beach in the South West of Western Australia. The decaying bird was used as an actual aerosol paint stencil and photographic source for the final artwork completed using mixed media techniques. I discovered the Pied Cormorant has significance in local Noongar Culture as the conveyor of souls. In many other cultures diving birds are thought to ferry spirits of the dead to the next world, situated underwater rather than in the heavens. The video Soul Carrier is a collaboration with multi media artist Roly Skender.

Barenzirkus is a found footage video re-presentation of an super8 film depicting a Russian bear circus in the 1960s. The soundtrack was composed by the artist before he had seen the film, as an idea of what he hoped the film would be like. The video is the first time the artist ever saw the film.
Barenzirkus has been screened to acclaim worldwide and was released as part of a best of British video art DVD by the UK Arts Council.

In early 2024, scientific investigation into unusual submarine seismic activity in the Indian Ocean, approximately 20 kilometres west of Wadjemup (Rottnest Island), led to the discovery of the tentatively named Perth Fissure; a deep-sea trench of currently unknown area and depth. This exhibition showcases the preliminary findings of the Perth Fissure Deep Sea Survey, a multidisciplinary team of marine scientists, geoscientists, oceanographers, occultists, theologists, and xenolinguists. The Perth Fissure Deep-Sea Survey is generously funded by the Dagon Foundation.

‘A Dethreaded Screw’ seeks to experiment within the stratified, determination of systems.
The work intends to elaborate the failures of these systems and the subsequent qualities that emerge. Existing within the world of mg.g.M.Mg.MG, this work extrapolates the circumstances of Meat Glitch: an atemporal, cosmic entity, who exists at the events of failure and cannabilises them as future-rhythm-fuel.
